Why Have More Than One ?

For me it's a combination of enjoying collecting different razors and enjoying the variation of different razors. Each one shaves in a slightly different way and I enjoy them all for different reasons. There's something quite satisfying about shaving with a razor that's 50-100 years old!

I rotate all my stuff, razors and brushes every week, soaps every day.

+1 Totally agree...
Tried and enjoy vintage...now tried and enjoy modern including a fully stainless steel razor (albeit only a RR GC.84-P SB)
I rotate all my stuff, razors, blades, brushes, soaps and aftershaves every day.

I'm trying to be more selective in what I buy in future. At the moment I have a Feather AS-D2 a Feather AC SS and a vintage Velvet DE razor. I will shortly put the Velvet up for sale as I just don't use it enough. One DE and the Artist Club gives me all I want from a shave.

I really wish it could be as simple as that for me, but if I'm not changing razors it just doesn't feel like a hobby to me and it becomes what I used to do all my life (before shaving became a hobby,) shaving for work and it didn't matter how good it was, as long as it looked like I had shaved that was okay.

The only time I enjoy shaving with the same razor more than once in a row is when I have a new razor or when I'm trying to nail down a razor / blade combination.

Some of my razors are daily drivers, others will give me such a close shave that after 24h I could not use the same razor and then I enjoy something different like a SR at least once a week.

Amongst the daily drivers I have the Rockwell 6s, RR Game Changer, ATT M2 and S1 then for a bit longer than a day I have the ATT R2 and S2, Rocca and for longer than that is the R41. The SRs fit in between.

I'm sure I would get irritation if I were to use the R41 as a daily driver, or use the ATT R2,S2, Rocca as a daily driver for 3 days in a row. In fact, the R2 and S2 used to give me a lot of irritation when they were my daily drivers some years ago, before I understood what my face can take and how often.

Having devided my razors in this way I get fantastic shaves, I never get irritation and I enjoy my shaves

I've read of some people expressing guilt over the size of their collections. It's easy to feel guilty about the size of a collection. If you've built your collection, you're not in debt having assembled it and you enjoy it (regardless of size), you (we) shouldn't feel guilty. The issue comes if the thrill of acquisitions is covering an underlying problem and the spending becomes uncontrollable.

That's my deep Monday morning input. Now if you'll please excuse me, I must go and deliver excellence for my employer!

I'm in agreement one should not have any guilt for having a collection of razors or high value shaving items be it a brush/razor etc. If one can afford the items in question and it gives you pleasure to assemble/use the such a collection then that's all that matters.

Then again if you get a lot of pleasure from a one razor/brush/soap/blades then great for you.

It's all about finding what suits your needs the most and always delivering excellence for your employer on a Monday morning....

Hear hear!

I like a bit of variety and different razors shave differently for what you might need at the time. Want a quick clean up or your skin is a bit sensitive and a mild razor will do it. If you've left it a few days and need to mow down a few days worth then something more aggressive.

I tend to like variety in most things each day from fragrance to food

I bought several when first starting but have now three razors that get the most use. The DE89 as it is so comfortable and hassle free, The Merkur 37c slant as it is smooth, efficient qnd forgiving (no idea what some online vendors mean when they say handle with care: it's s pussy cat never even drawn blood with it). That was gifted to me by a bloke here and was much appreciated. Lastly I use a Schick Injector a lot (another TSR gift) which is a lovely shave. I had a Parker 24c but lost it and don't really miss it. i would not mind trying a Fatip Piccolo but in no great hurry. I could get shot of all mine save the DE89 and I would be happy.

The original question was, I think, partly about whether having multiple razors was functionally better or whether One great razor is enough. I find if I shave with the same razor repeatedly, my skin gets tired of it and plays up. But if I vary the razor, or the settings on an adjustable razor, it seems to give my skin a rest somehow. I don't know why. I always thought that a mild razor could be used indefinitely but I find the occasional super-close shave helps. I also like the collecting and experimenting, but there does seem to me to be a benefit from varying the routine. So I have lots of razors and rotate them. I have lots of vintage Gillette razors and they get used the most. I love the Black Beauty/slim adjustable (and have three, all slightly different). But I also love the heavier ball-end Tech. At the other extreme I liked my PAA Bakelite slant (and regret selling it) and the lethal R41.

Why Have More Than One ?

Because.....

I shave with all of mine in a rotation that will take more than a year to get through. They all shave perfectly and I could use any one of them as my "only" razor, but I'm a vintage guy, and I appreciate the different years, styles, weights, looks, and feel of the different ones. I would keep them even if I didn't use them.

It doesn't matter what razor you use, or what the price tag said, they all shave unless they're broken. I do believe it's a bit foolish to spend heavily for a shaver, when 20 bucks will get you a great razor.

That's a bit like saying why buy a wine at £10 when a £3 wine will still get you drunk.
for me the feel of a turned stainless is far superior to a say injection moulded.
Having said that i do agree that vintage is probably the way to go

I've had loads of razors, from vintage to current ones. Once I got a Karve, I thinned my collection massively. Swapped the Karve brass for a stainless one, and now instead of drawers full, I have the Karve, a Schick E, and a vintage Schick shavette. All the best in their areas (for me). It was the thrill of the chase, trying something new which got me. These three razors are so good, I don't feel the chase is there any more.
