Whisk(e)y for beginners.....

I recommend going into a good off license / wine merchant and having a chat, on top off the good advice on here. I agree with sipping first and then adding drops of water. The water increases the temperature of the Whisky, which releases oils and flavour.

I used to hate the stuff, absolutely love it now. There is so much choice, I'm sure you will find something you like.

At the moment I'm drinking Tamdhu 12 Yr old (nice sherried, orange and spice) and a Glen Morray 15 Yr old, which is similar - although YMMV.

After a week of trying a few miniatures, so far I have really enjoyed Monkey Shoulder & The Famous Grouse. Going to try Talisker tonight. Smells like it's been barbecued! Not sure it will be for me. I understand, it's a peaty one.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys - really enjoying the advice.

the whisky exchange.com is a great way to try various miniatures of whisky. Try lots of whisky's and you will find you're taste. Single malts are my taste.

As to why us Irish spell whisky with an E is beyond me but we don't make the best whisky in the world.

The best whisky in the world is whoever tastes it in the moment.

You were close to the reason, the Irish used to make far superior spirt so the added the E to distinguish there product from the inferior scotch at the time. This is no longer the case but the Irish still make some good whiskeys give green spot a try.

The only Irish Whiskey I have tried so far was Tullamore Dew at a party a few weeks ago and I actually found it an easy drink. You can pick up miniatures at Asda Glen. Give it a go [emoji846]

Yes indeed Green Spot is a good whisky, I drank a bottle of it along with Yellow Spot and pretty much every Irish whisky we make (I'm not an alcoholic lol)

I still stand by what I say though.

There are nights when all I want is a 12yo Redbreast but other nights I want a glass of Wild Turkey.

Thank God we all have an opinion otherwise we would never have the plethora of whisky choices we enjoy.
