What Watch Are You Wearing Today?

True enough with the quartz revolution of the 70's from a time keeping aspect mechanical was obsolete but from an aesthetic view still in demand.
Given that I have no need for a high precision time piece on my wrist at any time, the aesthetics and craftsmanship of a quality mechanical watch far outweigh the accuracy of a quartz watch. I own five high quality watches which I keep running all the time and I only have to re-set any of them very infrequently. I have nothing against quartz movements per se, but the movements in my Pate Philippe and Vacheron Constantin are superb specimens of the watchmaker' art.

I bought my Sub date new in 2013 and remarkably it has held a steady variance of less than 2 seconds per day since then.

It hasn't yet been serviced and the only attention i have given it is to check for magnetism from time to time and demagnetise it if it shows any symptoms (as i sometimes work on devices containing strong magnets, so those and magnetised tools are often around, although i try to remove and keep the watch away from them as much as possible).

I have a Tag Quartz i bought in 1994 and that still runs reliably with a variance of approx 6 seconds per month.

The harsh reality of modern life is that the most accurate device is your smartphone, which is self adjusting, picking its reference time from the cell network it is connected to - you will find your phone is beat perfect to the second with any radio controlled clocks/watches you have.

......... But there is still nothing better than watching a mechanical movement tick away (y)

I believe they have a slight, maybe a half second, lag time.

Yes there is, it's called a HEQ watch. :p

If a watch pleases you then its passed the test. If it keeps accurate time then that's a bonus.
Exactly this - my view is that nowadays, a wrist watch is a piece of jewelry / investment piece / object of affection, that suits your personal style and also happens to tell the time.

They have long gone from being an essential part of personal equipment. The current time is easily checked from a variety of other sources .

I feel lost without my watch. Yes, there are a multitude of other sources for checking the time, but I always refer to my watch first. It's akin to me preferring a quality badger shaving brush and shaving cream/soap over canned gop or a fountain pen over a Biro. Aesthetics and craftsmanship also are important to me in the watches I own.

It has been said that an automatic watch is as a painting and a quartz watch a photograph. I wear a watch as I am used to one after decades and more importantly I supplement that need with accurate time. I have no more desire to return to setting/winding a watch nowadays any moreso than hand cranking an automobile every time I start it. I appreciate the work & precision that goes into an automatic watch, but just as with a horse drawn wagon they are an evolutionary "dead end". Imagine James Bond leaping into action from the latest Aston Martin and whipping out a.........................

single shot flintlock pistol!! ;)

The one I actually own is the black dial version, with the bracelet.
Got it through a trade two weeks ago.
Traded my 3-month old Gravitymaster GWR-B1000-1A1ER for it (the Alpinist I got is two months old).

Earlier this am I switched to a leather strap for the first time.
I'll probably be ordering a couple more custom straps, for 20mm lug width...

Timekeeping for this copy is abt +15"/day at present, also the 70hrs PR comes in very handy.
