What made your day a good one

Ah Graeme that's no good mate! Not even a DFS? Or bit of sunshine? (I know it's a rarity up there but here's hoping). Mind you a bit of a grump can do you good sometimes.

My day has been fairly OK (apart from taking my motorbike for an extended and expensive stay at the mechanics). My shave today with my Slim and a new Astra SP was ace. I'm still going to put "Mad World" on repeat and neck a few Taliskers mind. Gotta let stuff out sometimes!

Excellent news. Anywhere we can come and watch you at your swashbuckling best?

Thanks for the support! At amateur level, it's not really a spectator sport - any spectators are generally over-zealous parents. We do get spectators, but they just have to squish in around the edges, keep out of the way and guess when it's okay to talk to the fencers. Fencing competitions are a beautifully confusing muddle for folks who don't know the format. It's at the EIS in Sheffield over the Jubilee Weekend. I'll be there on the Saturday.

What made my day a good one? Absolutely feck all, that’s what! Grumpy old fart, that’s me. Should change my user name to Mr V. Meldrew…

You know what, lad? In many respects a day that is just a day ... a day like any other day, is just a day. They're good days, too. Potter about, whittle some wood, enjoy a cuppa, gaze out of the window. You're not a grumpy sod. It's just time of life.

Gender? What if a guy wants to be a girl like they do everywhere else? What if someone identifies as the winner before you even start?

We follow IOC guidelines - https://www.britishfencing.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Transgender-Policy-updated-20082020.pdf

To be frank, fencing is one of those sports where gender really does not matter. We train mixed and there are mixed competitions. Once the mask is on, it's just another fencer in front of you. Thinking on, I think many weight-classed sports (not that fencing is, but you understand) could as easily be mixed gender.

... but identifying as the winner before starting? Well, that's the Italians in fencing. Even when they lose, they still think they've won.
