What did your Dad shave with?

My Dad's in his early 80's and he used a Tech then a Wilkinson's Flip Top before switching to a Gillette Contour.

As for my shaving hobby, he seems a bit perplexed by the size of my collection but pleased I'm shaving as before I started this hobby I had a beard for the best part of 15 years and he wasn't really enthusiastic about that!

For most of his life a Gillette Flaretip, a Kent badger brush and Floris shaving soap. In his later years he changed to whatver carts were the latest and greatest, but stuck with the Kent brush (I bought him a few as presents over the years) and Floris soap, even after they changed the formula. Not that he bought the soap, it was always by mother's task.

My Dad has used a Braun electric for as long as I can remember, which dates back to the early '70s.

When I was in my teens, he gave me an electric razor, and no further instruction. That razor was was pretty nasty, and left my face feeling raw every time I used it.

When I left home a couple of years later, I switched to wet shaving just like all my friends did.

I have a mental picture of a 40 something man in the 1970's (sideburns, flares etc) standing over a 13 year old boy with an electric razor in his hand and saying 'This is the razor I use. I hate this razor. It tears my face up. It is now yours.'

I've never shaved with an electric razor, I worry I might be missing out on something. The closest I have got was when I used my clippers to trim my beard down before wet shaving and it would always be a horrible experience.

That mental image is not far off at all.

It's nearly 30 years since I last used an electric razor, and I've no desire to use one again.

I'm pretty sure he used an aluminium Gillette Tech before I came along but he had a beard until I was 2 or 3.
Apparently I was with him in the Bathroom as he was shaving it off at the request of my mother, so I wasn't freaked when I saw him without his beared for the first time. But half way through his shave he had to call my mum to take me away as I was picking up the hair he'd shaved off and was trying to stick it back on his face, uttering the words "nuff now daddy, nuff now".

But the wet shaving days are over for him, now he generally uses an electric one.
I'm trying to convince him to start using a DE again, he's yet to take the bait.
