I've been listening to some Queen this morning, from their Wembley Live Aid performance. Someone once said that one thing that distinguishes great performers is that they hold nothing back, that they 'leave it all on the stage.' That is certainly true of Freddie Mercury, who knew at the time that he had AIDS, as was portrayed in the recent movie about him. At.that time, the mid-1980s, I had not yet become a Queen fan. I guess partly it was because I was just too conservative to appreciate them. Partially it was because I was a medical student/resident at that time, and some of the first hospital patients for whom I provided care were men dying from AIDS complications, which were horrifying; it sort of colored my perception of gay men and of Freddie. In my older age I've come to like Queen's performances more, and I'm in awe of the power that Freddie had over the huge audiences.

I've never been a Queen fan, although I like Bohemian Rapsody very much. I believe we didn't know Freddy had aids until he died, at least I didn't know. The song Who Wants To Live Forever got a complete different meaning by then for me. Freddy was a great singer, songwriter and piano player.

Similar to you, @abj love Bohemium Rhapsody. Although I will check out the Live Aid concert as posted by @churchilllafemme This guy is one of my favourites on Youtube, and quite coincidentally been watching this afternoon.

I couldn't avoid hearing some Adam Lambert this morning, because my wife - one of the 'Glamberts' who has followed blogs about him for years since his American Idol days - was playing his newest single release in the next room. I generally have not been fond of his choices in music to perform, which tend toward techno, but when the music is show songs or more traditional pop, such as the Cher piece in this video, he is one the finest young stylists around.

Just heard that Mark Hollis, Talk Talk frontman has passed away aged 64. Really sad news. I love Laughing Stock, Spirit of Eden & The Colour Of Spring, and his solo album. RIP
