Weck

So I am finally thinking of getting a Weck after hesitating a couple of years due to the very aggressive look. Anyway, are there different models out there or a Weck is a Weck, no more no less?

Given they started in 1909 and evolved from there for a good number of decades, yes, there are a number of models.

The Weck Sextoblade is the main disposable blade straight and that goes back to the original 1909 patent. You can get black and ivory coloured scales for a really classic look but also lucite later on - I've got red and had a blue sparkling one. There's also really early ones with cardboard scales and the pre-market which is stamped.

Then, there was the Weck Orderly which is all stainless. This was, I gather, issued to the US Navy Medical Corps and will often have that branded onto the scales. This is a nice one to have, but it is heavy and unless you're used to all stainless straights it will feel heavy. It is a beast. Presumably, this is a pre-surgery prep razor.

That razor does have a little sister, the Weck Bantam. I've also seen a brochure where it was referred to as a Weck Nurse's Razor. It's lighter than the Orderly and a tad smaller. All stainless again, though.

I think that was about it for Weck themselves on the straights front. The format was picked up by Diane, Fromm, Burmax, Personna, etc and marketed later on as hair shapers. They do still do a good job of face shaving, naturally. Also consider the same format from Dubl Duck - I've had a pink and a purple one from their brand. Nice if you've other Dubl Ducks in your straight collection.

I put together a post on another forum about Weck: https://www.atgshaving.com/threads/weck-1909-on.17431/

... the blade will fit into these medical/surgical razors as well: https://www.theshavingroom.co.uk/community/index.php?threads/weck-surgical-prep.30374/

Blades? Personna is about it for today, but if you can get hold of Diane brand then do get those in. They're platinum whereas Personna is regular stainless.

Some nice Weck razors out there but might try my luck on a modern (cheap) hair shaper from Dianne, Fromm, Kismet or similar to get a feel for this type of blade.

Always amazed by your knowledge of our hobby , great post !

Haha! Cheers! I spent the first couple of years down some very deep rabbit holes and tried quite literally everything out there. If there's some weird or wacky shaving contraption, I am likely to have tried it.

There really is some great gear out there that has fallen by the wayside over the years and this is one example. I guess right at the very beginning of the twentieth century, there was a market for new kind of straight; one with a replaceable blade. As the safety razor gained in popularity and sealed itself into the market as the best choice, these kind of razors had to find a new niche market and ... yes, got repurposed as hair shapers. The very excellent Durham Duplex went the same way, remarketed as hair shapers and ultimately dog dressers.

... Rolls Razor ditched the market entirely and went on to make washing machines! I kid you not. The Rolls Razor is an inspired piece of kit.

Amazon.se, fast delivery, first impression, not bad, less flimsy than expected, this might be a newer (or older) model with the eject helper button on top and not on the side as pictured in their ad, different design of scales and no thumb notch, overall a longer bladeholder, still a postive first impression, going to test it tomorrow

It really suprised me, blade is looking aggressive to me so to be on the safe side I put on my reading glasses this morning before shaving, blade proved me wrong with a very smooth shave, now kicking myself for not having tried this option before.
