Hi guys,

For many years i've been using the gillette razor blades super stainless, as they are excellent and give me a great shave. However, I've recently come to learn that gillette test on animals, and as a strict Vegan i've taken the decision to source my blades from a more ethical company. So, I was just wondering whether anyone knows of any similar high spec blades produced by companies that do not test on animals?

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware Gillette have quite the monopoly on modern shaving blades. And as they're owned by Procter & Gamble they reach across many blade brands.

“Edgewell” (Personna, Wilkinson, Schick) also test on animals.

So I'm most cases it's not the products but the parent companies that test on animals.

It may be very hard to find blades that aren't tied to companies that don't.

Possibly Feather blades as I think they're still an individual company, but it will probably be better if you do some research on your favourite blades and find out where they come from.

Hope any of that helped.

Feather sounds like a good shout! Will contact them to ascertain the facts! Thanks! Oh, what about shark super stainless. Do you know who makes those?

What if the staff in the factory wear leather shoes?

That is none of my concern - that is their own personal choice. As long as the company themselves have a policy of not testing on animals - that's all that matters to me

From my research Shark are owned by a metal works company, the likelihood of using animal testing is probably very low compared to a pharma/medical company.

I have some Super Max lather cream from Savers which say not tested on animals. The same brand makes rather nice DE blades in India.

If you are at it ethically, I would also pick up an Arko shaving soap stick, if I remember well it is maybe the only shaving softeare product without plastic in it's packaging.

But it's full of tallow

You're right! It contains potassium tallowate, and the tallow is animal derived. From google: "Tallow is the fat derived from the fatty tissue of sheep or cattle. Sodium, Magnesium and Potassium Tallowate are salts of the fatty acids of Tallow."

How people feel comfortable using this stuff I will never understand. It's like brushing your teeth with human faeces. Just no!

Any company based in the EU without a pharma business will not test on animals as they are not allowed to. Blades are difficult as most are produced by large companies like Energiser & P&G who own businesses world-wide. As mentioned Feather is an option as well as Lord, Super-Max, Merkur, Croma, Dorco, Derby, Timor, KAI, Treet, Rapira, US made (Accutec) Personna & Souplex.

Not one for Mucky Fat sarnies then? I do admire your quest for comparisons though even if I think brushing your teeth with human faeces was going a tad too far.

No it isn't. For one thing fat and faeces of any species are in no way similar, for another the fat once saponified is no longer fat, it's soap.

As to being comfortable with using soap made from animal fat, I'll happily eat animal fat in the form of pork scratchings, streaky bacon, beef dripping, minced beef, sausages and any number of roast dinners. Considering that the majority of us eat the stuff shaving with a product derived from it is no problem at all. Not to mention that tallow is a byproduct of the meat industry therefore making use of something that would otherwise go to waste.

Say, we don't need someone like you pointing out concrete, verifiable & logical facts such as this in a thread fraught with emotion and more importantly "feelings". ;)
