The ultimate brush?

Hi Fido,

I think you already have some great brushes, and I think the ultimate brush is one you already have. I have one too. And it's not expensive!

The humble Duke 3 in Best.

What an awesome brush.... imagine:

  • A Chubby 1 knot, but very slightly less dense
  • A more comfortable handle than the Chubby
  • Paints as well as it swirls
  • Gives a fantastic scrub without overdoing it[/list:u]

I've tried a lot of brushes over the last few months, and I can confirm that the Duke, along with my Semogue 1520, are my top brushes at any price!

I would save your money and spend it on soaps/creams.

I am indeed very happy with my brushes and they all get better with use. I agree that the Duke 3 is a fine all round brush. I also enjoy my Kent BK 8, shavemac 177, Semogue 1305 and now the Vulfix 404. A Vulfix 2234 and the new Semogue special edition will complete this year's line up. One day, I will spend a lot of money on a brush, but only one I can lay my hands on before buying. So it will be back to Hungerford or to the London barber shops or Taylors and DR Harris to see what they can come up with. But that's for another day.

As for soaps and creams. I have a feeling I may be long gone before I use up what I already have in the stash. And then there's Christmas to come!

The problem with collecting is knowing when to stop. I think I'm pretty well there with shaving items for now, seriously folks. And what strikes me is that compared with many people, I haven't even started yet!

Usual suspects Fido...Plisson, Simpson and Rooney in Finest/2 band if you think you might like soft tips and back bone if that doesn't sound like your cup of tea then have one made and get them to stick a Finest knot in it, either standard or extra stuffing. It is not the same knot as any of the above but it will feel very different from anything you currently have and it's also one of my favourite's with either soap or creams.

Wonder if it's here? I handled most of these after I collected £300 from the sale of a couple of bells. Yet still I walked away! Wonder if it will be any different if I return?

Where was that? TGS? That's the difficulty, it's certainly a good idea to handle them before you buy but you won't really know about a knot until you feel it on your skin with some water and soap. What are you looking for?
