The origin of the word 'quarantine'

Coming under the heading of 'information that is generally useless, but quite interesting nevertheless', the word 'quarantine' is derived from the Italian 'quaranta giorni' - forty days.

How bizarre, i came across this fact 2 days ago whilst reading a novel based in Venice, apparently Venetians had an entire island put aside for sailors to live on in quarantine before they were allowed into the city proper.
