The 'Fergiebilly' Shim

Haha damn right, but I've got to be patient whilst you fix them up for me so can give the shim a test run in the mean time ;)
You can get a Shave out of Lather Catchers with a Shim..It Works Well in Some..But in this Particular SE its Not Great to Be Frank about it..This is Quite an Aggressive SE even with a Hollow Ground Blade & the Hollow Ground Blades are Far Smoother than a Gem Blade..o_O

Fair enough, it should make my shaves with the hollow ground even better then being able to compare against a shimmed blade and seeing the night and day difference between the two!

I finally printed three out today using the 3D printer at work. Out of those three, only one came out usable and I came home and loaded it on my Kampfe Star. Definitely holds the blade securely and blade looks even and edge looks like it will cut whiskers. Will try it out on SE Sunday.

Shaved with the wedge in my Kampfe Star tonight. WTG pass was fantastic with the blade cutting a lot better and smoother than without the wedge. ATG was a little rougher as the blade was lifting a little. Overall a better shave than originally without the wedge. Afterwards, I tried loading the wedge and blade in my Gem Jr. Lather Catcher and it did have problems loading correctly. That Gem Jr was designed to take both formats and so it really did not need the wedge and it let me know that and so the wedge stays only with the Kampfe Star. Anyone else with a razor designed for a wedge blade that don't have a wedge blade, I would recommend this solution, as it works.

Nice write up, sounding good to me!!

Looks like someone over at B&B in the US is also working on a solution for the wedge blade razors. He posted a youtube video recently:
A lot more complicated than the 3D printed wedge or the original shim made from a half spine, but does have some good ideas I might try with my shim, specifically using electrical tape to secure the blade spine to the 3D shim to add slightly more angle and possibly reduce the blade lifting when I do ATG and XTG. Of course, I have not stopped my search for a Kampfe with wedge blades in good condition.

Hell of a lot of effort for a blade you can only use a few times! Fair play to him for doing it, but I'll stick to proper wedge blades with razors intended for wedge blades! Or use the very quick and easy plastic shim if I want to give it a go with the modern GEM... Interested to hear how your experiment goes though!

The Gem Junior Bar Lather Catcher Requires One Complete Gem Spine as a Shim..It will Shave far Better..o_O

That Particular Razor Needs No Mods & What You Just Did will Not Work in Most SEs or Lather Catchers..o_O

I have a Kampfe and know that a regular Gem blade will NOT work well in it. I did not try the spine shim, but did use the 3D wedge and it works a lot better. The Gem Jr. Lather Catcher will work well enough with a regular Gem blade. Have not tried to shim the spine yet, but probably will shortly. I been in contact with the person that posted the youtube video on B&B and pointed him to the 3D shim download. He said he will try it because as Looney said - his solution is a lot of work for a few shaves.

Having used it several times now in both the gem junior and 1912, I have to say that I think worries about angle were unfounded. The angle cannot be greater than the edge hooks and top cap will allow - the original half-spine shim raises the angle to more or less it's maximum point, so the printed shim does the same by being squshed down by the top cap. It is less fiddly than the half spine, and it doesn't fall down the plug hole :) . I stand by my original statement that the feeling of greater blade rigidity and stability makes it feel a little more like the old stropping blades, which I've been using as well.
