Teaching My Son for His 1st Shave

I am really proud and happy to be able to finally teach my 20-year-old son how to DE shave on his 1st shave ever!

He's in University and due to the current pandemic, is on study-from-home. He's also working a part-time job. He was informed by his superior he needs to get rid of his lower chin hair. My son has never shave before and he has really soft facial hair. I was surprised he wants to shave and very happy to guide him.

My choice for him is my mildest razor, the Feather Popular paired with another mild blade a SuperMax SS. The lather is from the SuperMax tube and the brush is the Yaqi 24mm Sagrada Familia. For post-shave, it's Thayers with tree-tree, peppermint & lavender oils. I let him choose his aftershave. He chooses Clubman Whisky Woods.

He emerged clean-shaven, BBS, not a single nick, weeper nor irritation. He looks younger, smell terrific and he's now interested in my gears in my shave den... I can now justify getting more soaps/aftershaves and blades...and maybe another razor... ;) ;)
I planned to introduce him to some really safe metal razors (after the feather popular)...like the Gillette Rocket...
I can only imagine if he'll take over my vintage Gillettes...

Anyone here taught his son for their 1st DE shave...??

Aside from the physical impact of a DE shave, looking cleaner/tidier, smelling better, the main reason I'd always advocate this fantastic hobby is the psychological impact of a shave; I find it can be invigorating few minutes of one's day to wake up, have a bit of time to one's self when they aren't looking at a screen (be it phone or computer), and attempting to look one's best, which may seem like a flippant one but I genuinely believe taking pride in one's appearance is greatly beneficial to one's being.

Delighted to hear your son's first DE shave was a successful one.

A good recommendation for a Feather Popular as well, but if you have any Techs at your den then pass one onto him!

Thanks for your kind words.
I absolutely agree with your 1st paragraph. I am so looking forward to the daily morning shave time and start preparing the night before.
When I started it with my 1st DE the EJ DE89L, it was with the feather.... and I didn't know about brush and cream/soap. I just order the razor and blade and shave with the can foams. Needless to say, it was a little bloody.

For my son, I was prepared. He was disinterested all the while but I knew he gotta shave soon...:sneaky::sneaky:

The Feather Popular is perfect.....his shaved skin was really BBS!! No way my BBS can be that smooth...

I do have the Tech...and the British Rocket....

He will inherit all of the Gillette Vintage razors and these razors will live another 70-80 years

My Son 2nd Shave
Cream Proraso Green
Bowl Green Nubs
Brush Yaqi 24mm Mountain Lake Badger
Razor Feather Popular
Blade SuperMax Stainless 1st
Post & Aftershave
Special Thayers Mix
Proraso Green Splash
I help him choose a slightly different setup. Same mild razor but introduce him to the famous Proraso Green and his 1st Badger brush too. Showed him how to lather in the nubs bowl...not bad lather...
Showed him how to distinguish a dry lather requiring more water to get that sheen.
In the end...a good slick lather.
He likes the Proraso scent and mentholated sensation.
Shave went perfectly with no issues...better than my shave..hahahaha since his is actual BBS...so smooth his baby face.
He use the special Thayers as postshave.
I introduce the Proraso Green Splash and he likes it too...
I am very satisfied. My Son is clean shaven and smelling great!
I am preparing him for when he needs to return to the University. Discussed some on what gears he may want. Young guys don't really wanna spend long time preparing like me...hahaha
My wife is coming to her senses that all my purchases for shave gear is very useful afterall since her baby looks and smell great....hahaha...more credits points for future investment...
