Surprised. Suggestions please?

I wonder if this could have been the Edwin Jagger pre-shave - they have a menthol one and it often gets sent out as a sample. It's decent stuff.
@Blademonkey, I would never have thought of using Bart's Balms as a pre-shave, do they work well? I still have some left somewhere. Presumably it's the lotion (the more oily one) rather than the balm?

Pre shave lotions are all much the same, they go on your stubble and skin prior to shaving and help soften the hair and hydrate the skin, you can spend £Â£ on some or not a lot on others but they all do the same job, don't belive the hype!
Yes Bart's balm, the lotion will work as a pre and after shave. P.

This thread prompted me to re-visit Proraso Eucalyptus Oil & Menthol pre-shave cream and yes, it does make a small but noticeable difference. The shave is just a touch, well, "nicer" and smoother

Possibly overkill, but it only takes seconds to work a small amount over your face and then let it do its thing for couple of minutes whilst you get your proper lather ready.

A jar of it is fairly cheap and lasts a long time.

I have never used a pre-shave product but today, with a 5 day growth and a blade that's 2 shaves old, I thought I'd use a free sample that came with a blade-selection-pack.

None of the expected "I've left it too long" and "Should've used a fresh blade" aggravation. No tugs or burns and none of the expected blade-clog (I use an open comb).

I don't know what it was, the pot was unmarked. It was white and cream-like, so I'm assuming it was not an oil. Light texture with little greasy residue and with a strong-ish menthol feel and fragrance.

Not wanting to empty my wallet on a search, anyone recommend a reasonably-priced, or even cheap, example? Wouldn't object to lavender instead of menthol either?
Have you considered making your own pre-shave oil? I use an old post shave balm bottle (50ml is perfect) with a screw on lid and a flip cap that the sun can't get at and I washed it out with warm to hot water to remove any residue, then filled with carrier oils (unflavoured liquid coconut oil and hemp seed oil in a 50/50 mix of 20ml each. I then added a dozen drops of vitamin E oil and about half dozen drops of my choice of essential oil (how much and what kind is up to you). You will need to purchase two droppers (one for essential oil and one for vitamin E oil). Then Bob's your Auntie's live in lover you have your own custom pre-shave oil. It does cost on the initial supply run but that goes way down over the long run as you already have the ingredients for the next 15+ bottles you could get out of it.

That's a really cool idea but I am lazy. You have lit a bulb behind my imagination though...
