Supply single edge

Hi..I am new to the forum and looking forward to being a member.
I went back to DE razors after finishing work having the time now to enjoy shaving as it should be. I have few razors and enjoy trying new ones and selling my used ones so I can buy a different ones. I have recently purchased a new version of the supply single edge with the extra plates. I have watched the appropriate videos how to get the best out of this razor buy I am still struggling to get a smooth shave, really frustrating and disappointing.
Has anybody out there had any experience of these razors,I would appreciate any feedback.

Hello, and welcome.

I have the Mark I version of the Supply (in fact, switched it in to use this morning) and I get a very good shave from it. If you're following the video recommendations but still not getting the best from it, then it might be to do with the blades.

I started using the Personna blades in the white plastic injector casing and white cardboard outer, and, although they do work, they didn't produce the best finish. I now use the Chinese-made Schick blades, which come in a blister pack, a silver metal casing and 7 blades per pack. The other ones I have and use are the Schick Proline B-20 Japanese-made blades. Both the Far Eastern blades knock spots off the Personnas, in my view; being both sharper and smoother. The Chinese Schicks aren't too easy to find or cheap, but the Japanese, at 20 blades per, are reasonably priced.

Thanks,I will look into these blades,I have the personna blades which come as standard,I think I am catching the blade posts when injecting the blade and taking the edge off,I love the feel and design of the razor so will persevere.
Thanks

There were some problems with blade loading in the Mark I, but I understand these were ironed out in later versions of the Supply. Running the blade hard over the posts when injecting it, is a potential problem with many injector razors, both old and new.

The Supply is a bit different, in that the baseplate can be slackened or removed entirely. When I load a blade, I slacken the plate off a bit so that the blade injects more freely, and horizontal. I can also manipulate the injector "stem" (or "key", on Personnas) so that the blade isn't forced downwards onto the blade posts. When it's in and has (hopefully) aligned itself correctly, then I tighten the plate up with the thumbscrew. The main thing is to get the blade in without it wandering off the horizontal, which is when it catches or runs hard on the posts, and with minimum force.

Perhaps someone else might like to comment on this, but, when I compare the Personna and Schick injectors that I currently have, there are some very small, but noticeable, differences in the keys. I don't know whether this occurs in every injector, or if it's just a batch manufacturing variation. Whether this makes any big difference to blade loading across the types, I can't really say with certainty, but my impression is that the Schicks load more easily and neatly than the Personnas.

I have seen, elsewhere, some discussion on loading a blade "by hand" after it has been removed from the injector. In my view, this is both dangerous and pointless, as it nullifies the whole purpose of safe blade injection-loading.

This is all a bit tricky to explain in words, but I think that, if you persevere, you will get the razor working as you want it to.

Welcome to TSR Norvell06.

I own a Supply V2 with all three base plates for a couple of years. I have a love/hate relationship with the Supply. I was much like yourself frustrated with the blade/plate combinations I'd used so far. Nothing was delivering a shave I was happy with (or at least partially).

That changed when I paired Plate 2 with the Schick B-20 blades I purchased recently. I get an excellent/smooth/forgiving first pass WTG (mowing down a three/four day growth), then the hate part; Plate 3 with the same blade on the second pass XTG, which is very scratchy/sharp/unforgiving. Plate 2 on the second pass doesn't shave me at all (strange?) which is why I have to use Plate 3. Although I find Ferrum's comments very interesting. I've never experimented with blade position before, I've only tried a thin shim which made zero difference.

The Schick B-20 blades are key-less, so you have to load the blade by hand. I also take the razor carefully apart after every shave to clean it, then reassemble.

You could carefully load the blades into an empty injector, much safer than trying to load the razor, carefully depress the spring and slide the blade into the injector, then load razor using the injector cartridge.

I'd just like to update slightly, in reference to yesterday's shave using Plate 3 on the second pass XTG. I don't know why I haven't done this before (I've done it plenty of times when using aggressive/efficient DE razors); Riding The Cap with the Supply V2. I still sustained a couple of tiny cuts, but what a difference. Not as forgiving as Plate 2, but made for a less scratchy second pass. I hope to replicate this again next time, or even improve upon it.
