SOTD 04/01/20

It's great to be back! This morning I finally had the opportunity to put my new Colonial General V2 to the test. I really enjoy using AC razors. I've owned three prior to the arrival of this razor - Classic Shaving's Oren, a RR Hawk, and a Blackland Vector.

The Oren was just too unacceptably bulky and unwieldy. I sold it. The Hawk delivers an shave, but my Vector with a Schick Proline blade is a great shaver, and, after the arrival of my new General, now have another great SE razor available. After reading some posts on a variety of dedicated shave forums, I loaded it up with a Feather Super and had at it.

I hadn't shaved for a week, but began with a cold water rinse followed by a good thick application of my favorite soap, MWF. The first WTG pass took things right down to the skin line. So much so that the the second ATG pass consisted of nothing more than some selective buffing resulting in an incredibly close BBS that checked all the boxes. I feel smoooth, clean and refreshed.

RAZOR: Colonial General V2.
BLADE: Feather Super AC
PREP: Cold water rinse
BRUSH: MrEE Hybrid Badger Boar 007
SOAP: Mitchell's Wool Fat
POST-SHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Thayers Lavender WH and finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum

Wed 1st Bronze Day Shave..
Soap Colonel Conk Amber
Bowl Turkish Copper
Brush Yaqi 26mm Moka Express
Razor Gillette New SC
Blade BiC Chrome Platinum 1st
Post & Aftershave
Ice Water
Special Thayers Cucumber mix
Clubman Whisky Woods
Terrific lather from soap, bowl & brush combo. Creamy and really slick!!!
Shave with razor & blade pairing was great! Almost didn't feel the blade...so smooth was the shave. Not so efficient though. 3pass ATG, XTG/ATG, ATG & buffing. Ice water rinse followed immediately by special Thayers mix. No weepers nor irritation today.
DFS result with rating of 9/10

Ginger's Garden Ginger Blossom aftershave

I think the Rooney 3/2 brushes are my favorites to use (as opposed to just look at); the handle fits my hand perfectly, and the hair lathers beautifully and feels great on my face. The soothing aftershave, like all of them from GG, feels quite tacky when first applied but is no longer sticky when completely dry. (Yes, I touched my face!) And although I don't like a lot of floral scents, I really like the Ginger Blossom (White Ginger), because it brings back memories of arriving in Hawaii many years ago to spend a wonderful summer with a young lady who later broke my heart. Ah, those scent memories...

After the usual 1-2 minute hot towel prep:

vintage rebranded Simpsons butterscotch silvertip
Penhaligons BB shaving cream
EJ lined white rubber DE89/Gillette NOS Spoiler
no after shave needed
vintage Jacomo de Jacomo EdT

Turns out, for me the real test of a cream or soap is performance in a less than perfect situation. By that I mean being used with a razor that requires more attention or concentration, rather than something like a daily driver kinda thing. The blade loaded is here just a little milder than a Sharp Edge yellow label.

The DE89 head is like that for me......not something to be whisked around on cruise control with a little more bite and angle than I prefer. Close shave though and an excellent change of pace.

The Pens cream order came about partly since recently getting out the last dregs in the Racquets tube found NOS years ago. Sigh, crystals forming and scent diminished. Used it once and still ok, but not what it was.

So anyway, the modern Pens BB today was still excellent performance wise as remembered. Right measure of slip and cushion and no need any after shave. Easy to lather with nice looking and feeling results. Scent might be a bit mellower since last huffing long ago, but who knows. Glad to finally add some to the arsenal.

BBS results,

Martin

Other than the change to the EDP the same set up as yesterday; a good shave - after the second pass (WTG and XTG) I felt more stubble than I expected; went for a third pass on the face with no issues (XTG). A DFS+ result with no issues to report.

An enjoyable shave; can't put my finger on it - today felt wierd; maybe that's the new norm?

Hope everyone is safe, well and bearing up.

With best wishes,

Chris
