Well the (very) long wait is over. What did I think of the soap and did it live up to the hype?

It's a very soft soap, more like a firm cream. Similar to Declaration Grooming Bison Tallow.
Scent was pleasant but nothing to shout about and wasn't very strong either. Similar strength to Noble Otter.
Creating a lather was easy, it did go through a stringy phase but this didn't last long. The lather looked very thick and had a great glossy sheen. Things were looking up...

I found it lacking in protection and slickness on the first pass. Things improved on each pass and by pass three protection and slickness had improved to a more satisfactory level.
Post shave is very good...”every cloud...”

These are only my first impressions so don't read too much into them. You all should know how fickle I am by now.

So not a home run but not straight to BST either.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Cheers
Rob

Pre-shave:- Cold Water straight from the tap
Brush:- Edwin Jagger Synth. v2.0 Silvertip Fibre Faux Horn 25/58mm knot
Soap/Cream:- Wholly Kaw ~ Man from Mayfair
Razor/Blade:- Gillette Red Tip (0.81mm) 1950's England / Vintage NOS Gillette Stainless #2
Post-shave:- T.N. Dickinson Witch Hazel Astringent mixed into the 240ml bottle with Natural Glycerin (20), Tea Tree Antiseptic (10), Lavender (15) & Peppermint (10 drops)
Fragrance:- Proraso Wood & Spice

I've noticed a huge difference between the English Gillette Red Tip vs the US Gillette Red Tip, because, the English Gillette Red Tip is smoother and more effective during the shaves and I'm very glad to have the English Gillette Red Tip in my den.

SOTD 28 May through 02 May

Work has been off the scale busy - not managed to make time to post. On Sunday I had a family birthday party and wanted an excellent shave - also time was tight.

Decided to shave with Blackland Sabre v2 for 2 passes - DFS+/BBS- result. A third pass with the Sabre would have been to much - so finished off with the Pils, ATG.

Great result: dolphin smooth and no issues; first time I have mixed razors in a shave. Esentially followed the same set-up this week :)

Pre-shave: Warm shower, Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser, cold water splash.
Soap: MDC.
Brush: Shavemac ' The Flat Top' Slivertip.
Bowl: Giles Shaving Co - Spotty Pedstal Wet Shaving Bowl.
Razors: Blackland Sabre v2.0 and Pils 101NE.
Blades: GEM PTFE and Feather New-HI-stainless.
Post: Cold water, Fine Snakebite Aftershave followed by Skye Soap Co. Cedarwood and Sage shave balm.
EDT: L'Occitane Cade.

Oh, I nearly forgot - this week was the first run out wih the Fine Snakebite. Wow! Amazing stuff; a real blast to the senses - great skin feel (OK face freeze).

All the best,

Chris

Vitos Red
RazoRock Plissoft 24mm synth
Face lather
ER 1914
Gem SS PTFE w/ loom band shim
Thayer's Rose Petal and Aloe Vera
Pitralon Classic after shave

A 2 band shim works well in this razor: purely to minimise a slight movement of the blade, which does affect performance with the contemporary Gem blades. Plus, it reduces blade chatter.

So, a fresh blade was shimmed and it gave an excellent shave. I like the 1914; but I still think the 1912 patent variations give the best shaves in vintage SE land. (Edit: not including the wonderful Schicks, though).

Cyril Salter / Maseto ED. 2Band
Lea Classic soap
Gem Micromatic -open comb
Gem S/S [ 4 ]
Lea Classic A/S Lotion

Earlier in the week I had a poor Shave because I tried to hurry it along. Today using the OC I am aware to do the same would be courting disaster, so no rush today. Since getting to grips with this Razor I think its reputation as being overly aggressive is unfounded, get the angle right and it is as smooth and comfortable as most other Razors. Perhaps I did take a little bit longer with this Shave, but the quality of finish made it worth it.

I think that the ‘aggressive' term originated from those who haven't taken the time to understand the necessary angle with this and similar razors. Or those that aren't willing to invest the time. I find the MMOC a very efficient razor too. The R41 also has this tag. Angle, time and patience pays off, imo.

Hi Stephen,
You hit the nail on the head. I reckon this also applies to those who have tried AC/SEs and failed to get on with them, I find they deliver trouble free top quality Shaves.

  • Timeless SS OC 0.95
  • Voshkod (1)
  • Prep Preshave
  • Il Ceppo
  • Stirling Varen
  • MÜHLE Alum
  • Clubman Pinaud no bumps gel
  • Stirling Varen AS Balm
BBS and a DFS today. Great smell from the soap and AS Balm developed buy Stirling for our Dutch Forum, members report it as a bit like Stirling Glastonbury without the herb smell, if i must describe it, a freshly mown lawn on the edge of a forest that just had a shower of rain, very nice, i wonder if there is a AS or ODT that can match the 'green' smell of this soap and Balm (any advice or hints are appreciated)?
Strangely enough after having the Rapira Platinum Lux in this razor, the Voshkod from the same maker does not do the same good job on my 'problem bits' i have this piece of skin on the ringt side of my throat that has anarchist hairs growing in all kind of weird directions, quite a fight to shave it without causing razor-burn.
Second Third attempt to add a photo, as the site claims my shots are to big :-(

Smooth faultless shave from the Feather combination, with the Simpsons providing the required lubrication and protection, and a great tangerine aroma due to the Lucky Tiger.

Absolutely, Mike. It's similar to the ‘open comb razors are more aggressive than closed' argument. While it may have some substance, I think efficiency (aggressiveness) is more dependant on gap between blade and comb/bar. As you know, the Streamline is closed; but it's not exactly shy. The R41 too. By contrast, I find the Gillette New comparatively tamer than other OCs. Then there's the Gillette Red Tip: it can bite too, even with its closed bar. And, of course, there's the Schicks; E2,and E3. You can see daylight between blade and bar.
