SOTD : Saturday 27th April - Friday 3th May

Wed 1st May

Simpson Chubby 1 / Maggards 2Band
Williams Mug soap
Ever Ready 1912-Bathroom Set
Gem S/S { 4 }
Williams Aqua Velva A/S Lotion

I made amends for Yesterdays Shaving fiasco, where due to my attempts to speed up the Shave - the quality of finish was sadly lacking.
The 1912 Shaves very smoothly and quietly , and the overall finish was not bad at all.

Wednesday 1st May

Cold Water Shave
Heno de Pravia Glycerine Soap
Palmolive Shave Stick
Semogue 830 Boar Brush
Kai Captain Excelia (Japanese Style) with a Feather Super Pro
Alum and Rinse
Witch Hazel
Aloe Vera Gel
Alcolado Glacial
Oudh al Qamar EDP

I haven't used Palmolive Soap for ages and as I had an impulse buy of 8 in Wilko yesterday.....I thought it was time for a revisit! Slick and protective with a scent which doesn't interfere with Fragrance choice.
2 Passes and a touch up for a perfect finish:)

1/5/19

Soap - Cella
Brush - Omega 80265
Razor - Gillette Aluminum Tech
Blade - Voskhod (1)
Post - Witch Hazel
Balm - Nivea Cooling
AS - Benjamin's Bay Rum Mentholated

I really struggled to get a decent lather with the Omega brush today, it's not really been the same since I cleaned it with vinegar, the brush seems to require a lot more soap and seems to eat lather, which it didn't do before.

Even though the lather wasn't the best the shave wasn't too bad. I'd not used a Vokshod for a while and I'd forgotten how smooth a new one can be. It seemed to glide effortlessly across my face. Great blade.

Wednesday AM 2019-05-01

Moss Anniversary Slate scuttle
Rooney 3/1 Ivory Finest (22/44)
Jabonman/Eufros Sandalo shaving soap
Gillette New LC/Bob's Razor Works Bull Mastiff
Wilkinson 'Light Brigade' (4)
Floris Santal aftershave
Floris Cefero cologne (vintage)

The soap I got from a friend, and although it lathers well, it just smells like old soap. So I'll be passing it on to someone else and will keep looking for Sandalo that is a little newer.

The theme for today's shave was 'Downtrodden Oneblade or an upbeat disposable?'

20190501_151625.jpg

Downtown - Gillette Skinguard
Uptown girl - Gillette Skinguard 2 blade cartridge
Dragging me down - Razorock Plissoft 24mm
Build me up buttercup - Gentlemen's Tonic
Falling down - Nivea for men moisturiser

'The best a man can get'.

Mrs Satanfriendly doesn't think I am the best she can get, so this razor has a lot of ground to cover to live up to Gillette's claim.

A cheap buy at the local Tesco and to which I sacrificed a cut of Rib eye steak for. Rarely does anything get between me and my food and I really was at two minds over this one, but I let it win the day. Rib eye steak? Cheese butty? Rib eye steak? Okay, cheese butty it was.

It has been sometime since I went the way of a cartridge razor but curiosity killed the cat and it was time to find out whether or not going the way of DE's and SE's was a move well made. More so in consideration of the cost difference. Or better put, how much I have allowed it to cost.

So for buying cheap you get a handle which is the ubiquitous Gillette offering complete with splashes of plastic chrome - yuk! and tacky in a similar manner to Blackpool, and just the one Skinguard blade. The blade having quite some gap between the 2 blades and the usual 'lubristrip', or to be more upmarket 2 of them just in case there wasn't sufficient gloop to spread about your face. And I thought lubristrip was a sexual lubricant for us older generation still using a touch of Castrol .

There is also a very useful blade on the end of the cartridge which is very handy for trimming and those awkward places. I only found it by accident but I am guessing something may have been mentioned in the blurb, but who needs instructions? I obviously do.

No cans of shaving foam, no extra blades, no moisturizing creams and no extra anything else. A blister pack, the extraction of £4.50 and that is the lot.

Cream whipped in to the usual classy lather GT delivers and applied using the ever faithful Razorock. If I had a dog I would call it Razorock.

First impressions? It did take me back quite a few years and rather like the OneBlade it does make one ponder whether or not anything is actually happening. A quick run over with a finger and even more pondering over whether I am actually being shaved here or am I experiencing the after effects of the lubristrip? Feels very smooth to the touch. Much in the same way as the OB this is slick to use and can be thrown around ones face in a way no DE or SE could ever match. Three passes in as many minutes. Around the chin without the usual sense of caution and care being required. Under the nose was a bit more challenging. Because the blades have a relatively wide seperation one blade is just above the top lip and the other just under the nose which doesn't leave much of a blade strike. Ah ah he thinks. This is where the small single end blade comes in to play and soon sorted.

No cuts, no weepers, no irritation and to be honest what feels like a very good shave.

The usual final face lathering and a cold rinse. Hmmmm? May be not as smooth as I thought. Instead of removing the 5 O'clock shadow it actually seems to be more visually prominent. Strangely to the touch a pretty bloody good shave though with just a slight hint of residue growth . The acid test will come in 12 hours or so. With the likes of the other razors I use, 12 hours down the line there is still one wonderful smooth feeling. Time will tell.

It certainly doesn't get as close as say the OneBlade or Ikon, but £4.50 for a complete ready to use razor I am not going to complain. It is one I could see my wife happily using and me once in a while. A nice razor for hand baggage only on a plane.

BBS, DFS, DFDS, the Sofa Company and altogether a nice shave, but here is the big but again. There is no skill, no sense of fear and no real sense of achievement. Even less so than the OB which is going some distance to say. And it ain't as close, so fails on the 'best a man can get'.

But it has its place in life and a worthwhile little purchase. At least I can use it again whereas the Rib eye would have been a 'use once only' purchase.

Having a lack of fear factor I shall sign off this SOTD with some Fear Factory

Not quite signed off as yet and now for my cheese butty to finalise my shaving exercise.

Progress, OSP O&P, Omega (2).png

Pre: Nuage oil & Pears Original Transparent
Brush: Omega 63185
Soap: OSP Orange & Patchouli
Blade: Astra SP (3)
Razor: Merkur Progress 510 (#3)
Post shave: Alum Block, cold water splash, homemade Witch Hazel with Lemon & Lime, Cedarwood, Arabian Musk oil
Balm: Proraso Post shave cream
Aftershave : Floid SE Mentolado Vigaroso

Chickened out!!
I decided against another trial run with the Rocnel, I don't think my face would appreciate it. it was a really close shave last night.
I decided on the Progress 510 on a #3 setting - Safe as the proverbial houses.
Prepped with Oil and a coating of Pears for both passes.
A great face lather with the Omega and OSP soap, This brush is really soft on the face, it loses any stiffness when soaked.
A very comfortable 2 pass shave without incident, Prosaso post shave cream and a splash of Floid SEMV.
I think my face appreciates my care tonight. Feeling BBS again and smelling nice.
Have a great night all

  • Polsilver S.I. (1)
  • Vulfix 404
  • GFCC Bergamot & Neroli
  • Proraso senstive balm.
The first use of the Gentlemen's Face Care Club Bergamot & Neroli cream. Always been a big fan of the GFCC creams. Although the scent of this one wouldn't be my first choice; the performance is as good as their other creams. Cheap as chips too.

Okay, this evening I must admit....the shave with the Genesis was actually rather good.

When I finished off last night the blade still seemed pretty good (it was a 2 pass shave) so I tried it for its second outing today. And it was fine.

I also chose to use to use products from the lower end of the cost spectrum. I'm sure everything I used, with the exception of the razor, can be bought for less than £10 in total.

I carried out a 3 pass shave using pressure similar to that I use with a DE or SE razor. The result was a really smooth shave and a BBS finish. I did manage to catch the same bit on my chin AGAIN and I knew it was coming. When going against the grain I need to stretch that area in another way, the razor just seems to skip then catch. Nothing major, just bloody annoying.

Other than that wee hiccup it was a straightforward shave.

A really nice finish with the Nivea 2 Phase. My face and neck are smooth though I may add a touch of balm later on.

Is this razor growing on me? Not yet. This may seem like an odd analogy but I think it fits. A famous motorcycle rider was asked what he thought about traction control being introduced to his sport. He held up his right hand and said “This is my traction control”. This is exactly how I see the Genesis razor. It takes all the fun and expertise out of wet shaving. No challenge, just safe. It's still an outstanding razor which gives outstanding results, it's just takes away that living on the edge feeling (as Aerosmith would say).

Have a great evening folks. [emoji1303]
