"Silver Star" blades by Lord

Nice, what did you go for?

Lord Chrome & Classic ... and some Cool, which I've not tried yet. Silver Stars, too, obviously.

I've yet to have another go with the Big Ben but it felt a lot like the ASCO; both, I do like by the way, but they don't stand out to me like the Classic. I might buy in some ASCO as I just like the pack, what with orange being my favourite colour. The Classic feels a lot like the Shark Super Stainless to me, a blade which is like driving an older car without power steering so you still have that exhilaration of feeling everything. Almost like a stainless blade pretending to be a carbon blade. The Lord Chrome is a very smooth and mellow blade, for me; moreso than the Shark Chrome, which doesn't feel anything like. I find it quite the polar opposite to the Lord Classic/Shark Super Stainless. The platinums just don't do it, for me, so much so I wonder if I just don't like platinum ... except my three highest rated blades are all platinum, so go figure: Treet 7 Days Platinum (11/10), Treet Platinum (10/10) and Rapira Platinum Lux (10/10). Compared, I put the Treet DuraSharp at 9/10, the Lord Chrome and the Lord Classic/Shark Super Stainless at 8/10 but still very much enjoyed as daily blades - I like no frills stainless (although these are PTFE coated) and I do like carbon. I'm generally not a fan of the Russian blades and rate those much lower, Rapira Platinum Lux (10/10) and the PermaSharp Super (9/10) being the exceptions.

Anyway, back to these Silver Stars ...

I'm rather hopeful in light of what I've read about audible feedback and what Andy @ajc347 put about then seemingly being thinner than, say, Big Ben that they are indeed a thinner blade. @Ferrum said in the opening post that he tried the blade in an aluminium razor. I don't have such a fine razor in my collection, but my daily driver is a middle-era Gillette Tech with an aluminium baseplate. I also very much like the Star (Tech Clone) which I have another daily driver under the PAL brand with an aluminium baseplate. These razors do seem to like (and tame) seethingly sharp blades that in some other razors might well cause weepers and leave some burn.

Furthermore, I'm hopeful that the Silver Stars might top the Lord charts for me since it is reported by many folks who like these blades that they like them best out of the Lord stable. Perhaps something to challenge the PermaSharp Super, but from the Lord stable? The Lord Chrome and Classics will still very much have their place, as do the Treet Platinum and DuraSharps when compared to the very excellent Treet 7 Days Platinum. They all have their place depending upon how I feel at the time of shaving.

Variety is, after all, the spice of life ...

Have you had any more shaves with these @Ferrum ?

I finally got around to using one of these ...

That is one exceptional blade! I'll put it into context by saying that my highest rated shaves are those which delivery a consistent experience across shaves of the same blade and different blades. I also highly rate blades which have character that I enjoy, some of which might not be absolutely smooth or sharp, but sensational (literally) ... think: Treet Black Beauty or Shark Stainless, or Lord Classic.

The Lord Classic is a blade which seems to deliver an exceptionally smooth shave, even with razors that are tremendously mild on paper. That blade at the moment has an 8.5 rating with me and will no doubt rise to 9 if that experience continues across future blades that I try.

So, this Silver Star ...

Loaded into a rhodium replated Gillette Hybrid Tech, with the first few strokes I know I thought, "well, that's the Lord Classic again" but after those first couple of strokes on each side of the blade, any "newness" was stropped off and the blade revealed its true self: something beyond the Lord Classic in terms of smoothness and face feel. It's quite wonderful!

I've had one shave, but off that I'm giving it an 8.6, but expect that to rise ...

It put me a lot in mind of hte Super Shave X blade, which is sensationally smooth. It's also a multi-coated platinum chrome and polymer, presumably PTFE as well. This blade is stainless. Stainless. This is what I thought the Lord Platinum would be like. Truly top-tier!

I've also read that the blade is a little thinner than others in the range. It's reported to be quite vocal. The Gillette Hybrid Tech is a heavy, solid version and sitting on the heavy stainless steel handle I paired it with, it did still chirp quite a bit. I imagine in a lighter razor with a hollow handle, that might well turn into a rasp. I guess I'll find out as I'm going to try it out in a couple of other razors.

I did not enjoy the re-growth from the Super Shave X and particularly disliked the immediate post-shave feel from the Lord Platinum - this blade left me feeling really nice and in no need of anything more than a wash off and pat dry, and that's exactly what I did. Regrowth with the Lord Classic was just lovely - soft and consistent. Here's hopeful for this blade.

The Silver Star was highly rated by G D Carrington in his long quest to find the best blade(s) ...

This blade certainly seems to work well for several. Normally, I shave daily, but I've been slobbing about a bit over Christmas, and laid off for a few days; that is, until the new beard itch and scratch and general hobo aspect drove me back to my razor.

In this case, it was my Barbaros TR1 with a Silver Star, and this combination dealt with the whiskers as if they were butter, not bristle. Again, a very smooth shave with zero irritation.

I'm impressed. I might even go so far as to say that I am a convert to, and fan of it.

I mentioned in the recent Minora blades thread that the vendor had kindly sent me a complimentary packet of 10 "Silver Star" blades, made in Egypt by Lord Co. These are new to me.

To be frank, I'm always gratified to receive such a gift, but, that said, my expectations of quality etc. aren't that high. However, I'm pleased to say that these don't disappoint.

Stainless, described as "Premium High Quality" and "Med. Thickness", they are nicely-packed and single-layer-wrapped, without glue spots etc. In an aluminium Standard razor, they are very sharp and very smooth, for a clean 2-pass shave. I have a couple of places which are liable to "tugging" with any blade and razor combination, but these avoided that entirely, and no post-shave stinging either.

Over time, I'll try some of the remaining 9 blades in different razors, but if they work as well as on this first outing, I'll be in the market for some more.
I've spent the past few months shaving with just Stainless Steel blades using my Rockwell 6C on R6. Literally all thats been mentioned with a few that haven't. The standouts for me were Shark Super Stainless and Gillette Nacet. Still working my way through the others, but I haven't had the pleasure of shaving with the Silver Star Super Stainless. I'll probably test them on my next shave. I'm actually looking forward it, now that I've read all the comments!

Joy, too, that you can get Silver Stars in half-DE format. Ordered for my Katana razors.

@Hedgehog I think I'm fast finding that I'm a plain steel kind of fellow. Platinums and Chromes does seem to do it for me. I see you enjoyed the Shark Stainless < that's one I certainly like a lot. The Lord Classic is also a good, smooth blade and just a little different to this Silver Star.

Hey pjgh... Agreed. I think the KISS principle is true of blades as well most other things. For me, Platinums and Chromes have been less hit, more miss. Its unusual for me to have more than one favourite generally (I really liked Feathers for a while), but lately I've found these cheaper stainless steel blades really do have some merit in the right combination.

This is a great review and your description of the Shark SS resonates; they work so well for me - that they are also inexpensive and the art work makes me smile is also a bonus. I ordered some Silver Star on the strength of your review and look forward to giving them a run. I recall reading eons ago, although I may be mistaken, that Lord was originally established on the back of Wilkinson Sword machinery that was shipped to Alexandria when they shut up shop in the UK - it would be great to get the back story. I will also give the Lord Classic SS a run as well in due course.

It has been many years since I have tried a new blade; I mostly use Shark SS, Rapira SS, Gillette Russian Yellow's, Feathers and KAI's, with Shark SS and Rapira SS being my most used blades. In the main, standard PTFE coated blades work better for me than blades labelled as Platinum or Chrome coated. Thanks to this thread, I ordered 200 of Lord's Silver Star blades on spec, from La Barbeira, for less than £10 delivered, and placed one in a Muhle R89, a razor for me, that amplify's a blades characteristics. After a comfortable, irritation free head and face shave my initial impressions are, that the Silver Star is a smidgen sharper than it's stable mate the Shark SS. It provides less feedback or blade feel than the Shark indeed it is a mellow blade. Of course the Silver Star does not compete with a Feather, KAI, or Gillette Yellow in terms of sharpness, but if holds its own with other medium sharp blades like Rapira SS, Astra SS, Shark SS and is more mellow or has less blade feel than any of the aforementioned. It is a quality blade at a budget price. I was sufficiently enamoured, to order another 500.

I've always found blades made by Lord pretty good (apart from Sharks!), particularly Asco (cool pyramid pictures). The only thing that stops me buying them more often is the occasional quality control issue, and the 500 Voskhods I've got!
