Show your Panama hat

Good point with the leather band Frankie. I'm very tempted. Thinking of doing a long railway trip, covering various states in Asia, at the price they are I will probably need to sleep with on, when sleeping on the overnighters. But, as with the trip, it is a once in a lifetime investment, so it needs to be right.

Here are a few closeups. They offered me a ribbon colour change when I bought it but it was extra.

Thank you Boab and Frankie, really good stuff and the close ups very much appreciated; agree Frankie that is a very good site. Who would think that panama hats are such an in depth subject matter. Probably one of the most complex hat one can buy and where you really do get what you pay for.

Thanks Sabre, I will take a look. It is however becoming increasingly apparent that the Monticristi panama hats are in all probability a step too far for me; but I must say this post and my research into panamas has definitely been an education into one of the more finer point of sartorial style. I was totally unaware of the extreme prices for the upper end of this particular garment. I hope I stumble across one in a charity shop - some hope! I just may have to stick with my Kangol snap brim, for the time being.

If you're looking for a budget panama there is a retailer that goes by the name of Borges and Scott, they sell their seconds on e bay here:

I got one last summer and for the money i was quite impressed, obviously not up there with the best but for a summer/travelling hat absolutely fine.

Especially for the money, they look like a steal :)

I am sure the Christy Panama's at the York Hat Shop are not that much more expensive.

Panama hats is such a fascinating subject. But where and when do most people actually wear their hats?
It's a real investment obtaining a good quality one and obviously one would not want it collecting dust c/w the occasional spray or mist stream to keep it subtle; so when and where do you wear it AND what reactions do you get when you wear it?

I have to wear headgear pretty much most of the time, owing to solar keratosis (pre cancerous skin damage) so the panama comes out on the rare occasions in the west of Scotland that the sun shines. Usually any times it gets mentioned it's pretty complimentary, along the lines of "nice hat" or "It's nice to see a smart hat". Apart, of course, from some of the local youths who encourage me with such lines as, "Go on yourself you auld coffin dodger !".
