Show off your pens

(No, there's no "i" missing from any of the words in the thread title)

Even being new to pens/fountain pens I had of course heard of the almost cult-like following that had developed around the Parker 51 pens.
"Best pen ever made", "You will only ever need one pen - this one", etc.

The one I got is a 1948 full-size aerometric burgundy pen w/ 1/10 gold filled cap - and let me tell you...it is in gorgeous condition and has been taken apart, cleaned, etc.

Won't try it out with ink until tomorrow/Monday but I am very, very excited to do so.

Here's a writing sample from the seller - he is thinking it might be a Fine or Medium:

And, some photos of mine of the pen today - not too bad for a near 70 year old pen? :)

First year of the 51 vacumatic, apparently. Very nice pen indeed!

Received a Sheaffer NoNonsense pen from the 70's-80's.
This one has the wider rubberized grip below the nib so it's a later model and, I assume, hence technically a Viewpoint.

I really like the near-transparent blue body a lot:

(More info about these pens here)

These pens can be picked up for anything from a couple of dollars to forty-fifty depending on model/rarity and it's interesting to see that these old NonNonsense pens are now gaining a bit of a collector status due to how good they actually are to write with.

They come in various nibs - Fine, Medium, Italic, etc and were originally sold as a low-cost student pen.

The one I got has a Fine nib and it took a bit of digging to find one of those as it seems Medium is much more common.
It set me back about $9 but now I realize that I need either a Sheaffer converter (another $10) ...or some cartridge refills before I can use it. But use it I will.

Have to say I had half a dozen 51's and none of them were nice to write with, guess they just didn't suit me. I like Parker 45's and love Eversharp Skylines but sold all mine years ago.

I didn't like the first P51 I got...but just today I received a different one where a penmeister went to town on it and ground/adjusted the nib to be aligned with how I write. Very curious to try it out tomorrow and see how close he got to it :)

Nib specialist are few and far between in UK, unless things have improved in the last 10 years. A countryman of yours Richard Binder was THE man, but I believe he no longer does nib work. Shame as he was incredible and worth the shipping costs.
I did have a couple of 25's and I am sure I didn't sell them so will see if I can find them and try them again as I can't remember if I liked them.

I solicited the help of Rick/Charles Krantz that came highly recommended.
In addition to that I do feel a bit lucky living where I am as there is a dedicated group of pen enthusiasts that meet 2-3 times/month here and a couple of them are very skilled pen repair people :)

Also, the huge SF Pen convention is coming up in August where there will, amongst other things, be an 'ink testing station' featuring no less than 700(!) different inks!

Hi all, below is my work collection. All are used daily, two modern and one older that after a quick *ha* ink sac replacement is a lovely writer.

So from top to bottom:

Cross Century II given as a gift set from my wife when I still pretended I was young.

Waterman Carrene Essential Black & Gold.

Finally a Sheaffer Imperial IV Touchdown circa 1960.

As much as I'd like too carry on, I think I'll stop at three for now. High risk of another collection addiction!

Very nice :) Love the look of those Sheaffers from the 60's.

It's a lovely pen. A fraction of the price of the Waterman or the even the Cross. Only £20, although the ink sac was very perished and "bonded" to the metal sac protector. Took a lot of patience to clear the inside of rubber to be able to fit a new sac.
