Shaving Supplies for OAPs?

A year or so ago one a TSRer was collecting shaving gear so that he could give shaves to OAPs at his local care centre. Anybody know if this effort is still going on and who the Samaritan is? I have some shaving soaps to contribute if needed.

Don't think so. Vaguely seem to recall that the chap wound up shaving quite a few of the men in the care centre and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Might be that he just started shaving his dad (or some other close relative) though and then gradually started doing some of the other men. Seem to recall he had to use a new razor blade for each person due to H&S. Thanks for trying.

I have seen an article about this; I think it is now a franchise that started out in Scotland. I may have course got the wrong end of the stick. Someone got fed up with their job; jacked it in and then did a gents hairdressing course in order to provide a service for elderly gentlemen within the care home environment.

'Wrong end of the stick'? I've spent my life getting the wrong end of the stick. However, even if this isn't the thing I was looking for it is interesting to think that some folks are getting more involved in this kind of effort, even if it is for profit. Must be quite pleasant for the chaps in care homes to be able to get a wet shave (and haircut?) without leaving the home.

Hello Michael, I think that the main problem is, even if you are offering a goodwill service for free (and technically, you probably couldn't do it for free, if you were attending to a few people; and not even for profit), you must still carry public indemnity insurance, before anyone would allow you into any care centre to carry out any work or service whatsoever.

Probably best left to the experts Bob. As I've said previously, I get an excellent (better than I can do) straight razor shave from a barber in India, Goa, but it's a long way go for a shave; even at 50p per shave!

Health & Safety, a tricky thing to get right isn't it ?
We surely don't want a society as risk- adverse as today's -
On the other hand, we don't want nine year old boys crawling under weaving looms..........

If our civil courts would always protect people acting with common sense, taking sensible precautions and acting in good faith, it would be a better place.
