Shaving Other People

I've been shaving my father for just over a year now. Not every day, just when I visit him which is usually 3 days a week. He has Parkinsons and lives in a nursing home. I started doing it when he complained he wasn't getting a close enough shave from his electric razor. When I began doing it I used a tin of foam and my Gillette Fusion. A few months ago ScotShave (a good friend of mine) introduced me to the wonderful world of real shaving. To say I embraced it whole heartedly would be an understatement. I'd always hated shaving before, and now this... well this was enjoyable. Something to look forward to even. Who'd have thought it? Certainly not me. So for the last month I've been treating my father to the entire shaving experience. Now... he always enjoyed me shaving him before but this, he loves. He sits back, relaxes, and looks like a man experiencing some kind of bliss. For this evenings shave I treated him to my Yaqi Sagrada Familia brush and soaped it up with a lovely creamy Arko soap stick that I had squished into the bottom of a bowl. Over the past couple of months I have acquired a few razors. An Ever Ready 1912 and 1914. Also a Gillette SuperSpeed and a Tech. I still haven't plucked up the courage to use any of them on my Dad so I'm still using the Fusion. I'll do it soon though, most probably with the Tech.

And so back to my original reason for posting. I love shaving myself now. I look forward to that 20 minutes to myself so much I can't believe it. But you know what? I look forward to shaving my father more. I love watching his face as I do it. I love that he enjoys it. I love that he asks me to do it. I hate it when he doesnt ask me to do it lol. I love how he comments how smooth he is after I apply his after shave balm... but most of all I love he trusts me to do it for him.

Personally I think you should treat your Dad to something better than Arko ;), I hope you are adding balms and lotions too. I thoroughly believe that more should be done for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and dementia sufferers with regards shaving. I have considered volunteering at a day centre to do this. I hope you both continue to enjoy this experience.

I've been using a few different soaps on him but wanted to try Arko out as I was told the scent was nice and worked up a nice ceamy lather. It did both. I actually think it's underrated. You are absolutely correct regarding Dementia etc. I work in a Day Centre for older adults and have suggested shaving as an activity but the old H&S card comes in to play there. You're more likely to find success in volunteering in care homes but even then they may look for qualifications and you'd also need to get you PVG. Check this guy out

This is a really heartwarming thing to read. If you're still unsure (understandably) about using a DE razor on your father, maybe one of the more intuitive SEs would be good, allowing you both to enjoy the 2-3 pass routine? The Oneblade could be good for this or maybe the Gillette guard if the Oneblade is a too pricey.

I personally don't have experience of either of these razors but I've read of their simplicity from many of the guys on here.

What a lovely story.
You are blessed to have that loving relationship with your dad!

This made me spit out my java out laughter. Quality mate. For the record so have I... it's tough to decide which I prefer for totally different reasons of course lol.

Brilliant thread and great sentiments from Sabre, but as StrummerShave says, you probably would need: qualifications; 3rd party insurance etc, etc; but those guys would certainly love it and look forward to it, if they are able.
