Thursday

Some interesting findings today. Just had a leisurely shave after a two hour table tennis practice today. First match of the season soon.

Merkur 38C (new)
Simpsons Best Badger Duke 3 (also first time out)
Palmolive cream
Clarins moisturising balm (sample)
Clarins A/S splash
New Feather blade

The new razor much heavier than the 38C. Jury out for now on preference between the two.
The Duke demanded to be used just to paint the lather against the grain. But was very effective.
Palmolive was an excellent cream without excitement.
I've just used Derby Extras up to now. Always a nice smooth shave with no nicks or cuts.
My first and last Feather. Despite applying as little pressure as possible I ended up with a bloodied neck. They are much too sharp for me.
Given I was on a cheapie with the palmolive the Clarins samples were just to use them them up. Used as part of the complete Clarins package they are quite classy. But wouldn't use them again with the palmolive.

Which brings me to the palmolive cream and stick which I tried yesterday. They are terrific value for money and give an excellent shave. I am glad I understand why they are popular. But that's the last time I will use them. There are so many delightful and more exciting alternatives.

As for blades I know I get on well with the Derby's so I will try others before going back to them. But not Feathers.

If you were to try that blade again, you might well find that it has calmed down a bit, at least that's my experience. Other people here have techniques for taming these blades.

Wednesday

Culmak Spartan
Flair tip Rocket +Wilkinson UK (4)
Aluminium Tech + Feather (2)

Wool Fat
Proraso pre/post

The Wilkinson went all ragged on me halfway through, hence the razor swap.

Thursday:
Feather AC (folding) / Pro Guard Blade
Crabtree & Evelyn Pure Badger Brush
Truefitt & Hill Luxury Shave Soap
Taylor's of Old Bond Street Victorian Lime Aftershave

Issey Miyake L'eau D'Issey EDT

The way I figure it, if I changed the blade every three days one third of my shaves will be a bloody affair!

Go easy there Fido, products that may seem inappropriate now might just fit the bill when your'e technique changes and improves over time.
It can take weeks and sometimes months to sort your'e technique, and as I understand it you have just come off the cartridges where you may have been used to using a lot more pressure. I know it's tempting to discard everything that doesn't work straight off the bat but take your'e time at this early stage and try to avoid too many changes.

I agree with this 100% - I'd say stop changing stuff out this early, kick off with a well-respected blade and stick to it - something not to harsh, nor too useless - Red IP, Derby, Crystal - that kind of blade. Mess around with the other blades when you get more confident with the razor.

Always change maximum one thing at a time - so if it all goes pear-shaped you have a better idea of what was different.

Thursday

Kent/MWF
Men-U Boar
Schick Injector "E5"
Personna Blade
Harvard A/S

After giving it a second chance I really don't think the Injector is for me. It's very rare I get any significant burn or blood with my feather portable or superspeed but it's rare not to with the injector. I think it's time for it to move on, anyone want it? I think I'll put something in the B/S/T area :D

Good advice above from the old hands. I'm going straight back to my Derby's and BK8 for now. And will have more patience - and follow the one change at a time routine. Same principle applies to so many things - photography for example. And it feels a bit like the early golfing days when one was tempted to change grip and make swing adjustments at the same time. It never works and some of us never learn.

Friday:
Feather AC (folding) / Professional Blade*
Crabtree & Evelyn Pure Badger Brush
Aramis Shaving Soap**
Caron Yatagan EDT

*Haven't ever given these blades a chance after reading on another forum that the Supers were better. I don't know about that. This blade took whiskers off my face - including my 2-month old handlebar (fed up waxing it and getting it in my beer!)

**Bought this soap a week ago. Given it a few chances to impress me (including 'test lathers') and it just doesn't cut it. Dries far too quickly, which is a real shame as it has a great smell. I'm hoping the Czech & Speake #88 soap I've got coming doesn't end up going the same way. A good smell is all very well but if the lather doesn't work it gets binned - which is why I probably won't be buying Knize Ten soap.

Nooo! You killed the handlebar!!

If the C&S doesn't work out, I'll gladly take that off your hands.

Friday

70's Superspeed
Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge
Simpson's Best Badger Special
Pecksniff's Fern Shaving Cream
Nivea Cool Kick asb

The Pecksniff's stuff, as discussed before, doesn't know if it's a soap or a cream. All I know is; it works.
