Scent of The Day

Hi James,

What do you think of their toiletries and where did you buy them from?

I got them off eBay Rob, seems to be a lot of unwanted presents etc on there. ADP want £30/150ml for each one but they can be had on eBay for 1/4 of that ;)

In my opinion they are not worth the RRP (for me, being a cheapskate) but they're undoubtedly very nice products. The performance is pretty good, scent strength is even among them at around 5/10... It's subtle like the Cologne itself but I find applying the body cream before the spray increases the longevity quite a bit, I got around 10 hours out of it yesterday.

*Sigh* Yep, sounds like my modern Guerlain blind buys. I blame their current "nose" Thierry Wasser, he just hasn't got the x-factor of his predecessor Jean-Paul.

Thanks James. Yes I've seen them on eBay for a lot cheaper than RRP and agree they are way over priced. I might go for the Body Lotion though after you mentioned it prolonged the cologne.

As for the Guerlain. I'd read it performed well but like a lot of frags it didn't work on my skin so I'm not going to blame the product. I like the scent but sadly it wasn't to be. I've just sold it on and only took a small hit so I can't complain.

I think I might going for Christian Dior Eau Sauvage (the one from 1966)…or maybe Giorgio Armani Eau Pour Homme? Both I owned in my early twenties.

Definitely get the body cream, it's the only "must have" in the cosmetics range (y) Fair enough on the Guarlain, I've found Wasser's compositions to be fundamentally confused and discordant but as with everything it's entirely down to taste, I just feel he is a trend follower rather than setter. I bought a full bottle of Eau Sauvage a little over a month ago as found it a bit disappointing, it's a nice enough scent but too simple (a "dirty citrus" with no depth) and fleeting too, around 4 hours longevity in total, on my skin it is worse than ADP. I can only assume it's been reformulated to death.

I've been using these old chypre scents and trying to decide which I like best and I keep changing my mind (for once :p)

Chanel Pour Monsieur - Originally my favourite, longevity is always an issue but you'll endure it if you love the scent enough. I was put off this by smelling it on a heavy smoker, I had never made the connection myself as I've not smoked for nearly 8 years but this scent was made for smokers, the stale smokey smell intermingles with the Chanel and elevates it into something ever greater, it was a shock but in hindsight I suppose smoking was a lot more prolific in 1955... I realised immediately I could never wear it again without taking up smoking!

Eau Sauvage - As said above I found this to be quite simple smelling, pleasant but not worth the price when you factor in the poor performance. I love the bottle design but honestly cannot understand the cult status of this scent unless it was very different in its previous (pre IFRA) life?

Monsieur Givenchy - I still like this and think it's the best value in the category, longevity is better than both of the above whilst maintaining ingredient quality (it doesn't smell remotely cheap.) The only possible negative of this one is the carnation present which is decidedly old fashioned so whilst Eau Sauvage is a shadow of it's former self this one is perhaps too genuine! Great scent but I think the wearer needs to be late 40's+

Armani Eau Pour Homme, YSL Pour Homme & Capucci Pour Homme are all next on my hit list, probably in that order... I've read some gushing reviews on the Armani but apparently the current formulation is quite watered down.

That's my take so far :)

Thanks James for your thoughtful response. I recently had a sample of the Armani and it hadn't changed much from memory. Can't remember how it did performance wise though.

I've been tempted with Capucci Pour Homme for a while but the anise and cinnamon puts me off. I haven't tried YSL Pour Homme. I did have YSL La Nuit de L' Homme which was nice but too…poncey/pretty boy(?) for my taste. Hard to explain but it didn't suit my macho persona. Laffin!

I've never heard that about Chanel Pour Monsieur before. I gave up smoking in January so I won't be buying that one. I did have a sample a couple of years back and it lasted seconds on my skin anyway.

I'll defo buy the ADP body lotion, thanks for the tip.
