Sorry, but I just don't get wearing sandals or flip flops.

I don't like flip flops or open-toe sandals, with or without socks. My go-to sandal is what I wear for white water canoeing Keen Newport H2. They have a covered toe and hefty, non-slip sole. They provide good toe and heel protection from rocks and other detritus when one flips the canoe in rapids and are very comfortable to walk in. Moreover, they hide ugly toes, which mine are not incidentally. I wear my Keens 7 months of the year with shorts and with trousers. I'd wear them in the winter too, but they're a bit chilly and inclined to let the snow in. Admittedly they are not the most stylish foot wear, but they are very comfortable and do the job they are designed to do very well; very much function over form.
