Rooney Heritage Alibaba

Hi all,

I recently received an Alibaba 1. It looks superb, and the hair seems great. I have not used it.

I feel I made the wrong decision and bought too small.

For reference, I really liked the size of the 3/1 I had, so shall I go for the size 2 or 3, or another of the Heritage line?

I think I've decided that I'm not keen on stubby/chubby handles, although I have yet to try any size of the Rooney style 1s.

Thoughts welcomed!

Wow - you really are on a mission here to find the perfect brush! I would be interested to know which vendor you purchased the Heritage from and what the cost of P&P was (and any duties incurred)?

Is it not possible for you to get to one of the London shops where you will be able to see and feel a wide range of brushes?

Fido - possible, but I never seem to have the time! I've been to Taylors and Trumpers in the past but their brushes are all re-branded and it's hard to know which brush is which. The staff didn't seem to know either, maybe I just went on a bad day. I don't know of any store in London that carries Rooney, Simpsons in their original form. This was a while ago though so maybe things have changed.

It was from Classic Shaving and yes, unfortunately, I got stung with £20 customs charge. This is however the first time it has happened and I have ordered quite a few things from the States.

Buy another one, cut the knot off and stick the handles together...

Nah - think I'll just got back to Gillete goo.

I think the Simpson PJ2 in 2 band is the animal that you are looking for.

You may be right!

However.... from pics I've seen of the Simpson's two-band knots, they are more bulb shaped than their Super counterparts. I'm after a fan-shape, preferably.

I think I really like the Alibaba/Style 2 or 3/PJ type handles. The flared base prevents the brush from slipping out of your hand and the bulbous top part is great for gripping when the bottom of the brush is resting in the palm of your hand.

I find the small, stubby handles uncomfortable when loading the brush with soap - the resistance of the soap combined with the size/shape causes my hand to ache! Also, your hand gets covered in lather as it's so short, and your fingers are touching the knot. Maybe it's the way I hold my brushes!

I'm going to return the Alibaba and exchange it for the size 2 I think. Still has 20mm knot, slighly longer loft (50mm) and a slightly bigger handle. I think it will be perfect.

If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out the Heritage line. The hair is superb, not a hint of scritch/scratch, even when bone dry. I can't wait to use one.
