Rio Olympics.

Great day of medal hunting, a couple of historic achievements, Whitlock, Rose and Kenny, highlights for me.
Just waiting on Mad Murry to finish off Del Potro, and Cav to make his move.

Andy Murray must rate as one of our greatest ever athletes. His will to win is unbelievable.

That, Max Whitlock winning our first ever male gymnastics gold, and Bolt beating drugs cheat Gatlin made my night.

I keep promising myself a good nights sleep so I went off to bed last night at 10.30.

Guess who was back up just after midnight? And what a fantastic three hours. Andy Murray was sensational - now playing like a World number one. As an athletics fan I enjoyed most seeing the South African lad breaking Johnson's 400 metres world record. Bolt? I have mixed feeling about him. My British reserve doesn't sit comfortably with his antics. I preferred Andy Murray's response to victory.

As a fellow athletics obsessive I'll have to disagree with you about Bolt, Peter but never mind!

For me it is an utter disgrace Gatlin is still allowed to run.

Agree about the 400 metre runner though. Fabulous!

If my ability matched my enthusiasm for the world of sport I would have left Ali, Phelps and Bolt in the shade. As for the latter he's right up there with the greats. I just get a little uncomfortable with the hype that he generates. There are many sports stars who deserve more recognition that they get simply because they lack charisma. But that's life!

In my opinion the decatheletes don't get nearly the recognition they deserve. The decathlon is,perhaps, the most challenging event in the world of track and field. They are the true all-rounders, who can't be dilettantes if they're to compete successfully.

Mo has to get a mention again. Ethiopians tried to run his leggs off but still he prevailed. What's left for him to do? World Athletics Championships London 2017? Surely not Tokyo?
Mo farah has done wonders. Amazing athlete and a credit to team GB. And they say immigrants and asylum seekers don't integrate. Boy from Somalia did good. Wouldn't write him off for Tokyo either.

In total the whole event in my books was really excellent, but then again I do tend to love any major sports event. Politics and all the surrounding crap aside.

Yes, but at what cost? We'll never know the true financial cost of any Olympics due to the hubris of the IOC and host government. 'Bread and circuses' for the masses seems to be moto of those in charge and the cost be damned.

As with Old Rome... There must be a lot who benefit financially from the Games... Or otherwise they wouldn't have them.
