Razorock Hawk V3 SS

I don't think Lights will fit.

Feather Softguard blades are very good at taming an aggressive razor.

Hi Paul

Thanks for your reply.

I haven't used Feather Softguard either as they seem very similar to the Feather Pro Guard which I didn't get on with. Might give it a go, if the Feather Professional Light doesn't fit the Black Hawk V2.

Many thanks.

Hi Boycie

Sorry, I didn't realise I edited my post after you replied. I felt I was a bit harsh with Italian Barber in retrospect. I checked some reviews on YouTube, and the V3 is considerably refined/improved upon the V2. So I edited the post to what it is now, but more importantly your reply is still relevant.

Thanks for the recommends.

The Feather Pro Guard is an awful experience for me. I'd get a better shave using spaghetti!

But seriously, I do have a Feather Professional Light blade or two floating around in my shaving drawer somewhere. I just lack the confidence to test it, as every blade I've used in the Black Hawk V2 has always irritated my skin. Will the Feather Professional Light really tame the Black Hawk V2, and still provide a comfortable shave for me?

If I can find the blade, I'll let you know!
Sorry hedgehog - I've never actually tried the Light blade so can't comment on it.

The V3 standard plate has the same geometry of the V2 but the rear of the head has been 'reshaped' to help bring weight down. I personally got on with the V3 just as I did the V2. My initial thought would be the V3 would irritate you in the same way unless maybe the lightness of the aluminium is driving you to apply to much pressure?

Thanks for your reply Boycie83.

May be I shouldn't of edited my original post! But thanks for the clarification.

You make a good point, although I do own several light razors. So I'm somewhat accustomed to a light touch.

I do appreciate your detail though, as I was starting to feel the RAD kicking in again...

Hi Boycie83 and Paul

I'm not shaving today, but curiosity got the better of me... Paul is correct. The Feather Professional Light doesn't fit the Hawk V2 (I guess by default the V3 as well?) and The General for anyone whose interested.

I also have these blades to test (I'm not sure if they'd fit Hawk V2), and wondered whether you guys or anyone else can comment on the following blades or others i.e. similar to Feather Professional Light?

Kai Captain Sharpblade
Kai Captain Original
Kai Captain Pro Touch MG
Kamisori

Cheers.

The guard design of the Softguard blade is quite different from the Pro Guard and, for me, more protective.
Thanks for the detail Paul. That doesn't sound like it would suit me if the Softguard is more protective than the Pro Guard. Long story short, my beard at day three or four is pretty dense/thick, so the Pro Guard gives me a sub par SE shave at best. Comparable to a medium standard DE shave. While I get less irritation, for all my efforts not near DFS.

Cheers!

The four blades you mention in the previous post will all fit the Hawk. The lites are unsuitable for most AC razors AFAIK.

The operating principle of the Softguard is simply different, so I'm not sure you can extrapolate. I have a soft beard but it is fast-growing, so I need to shave very day. I can get BBS with a Softguard coupled with an aggressive razor but any attempt with an unprotected blade causes too much irritation.

If you would like to try a Softguard drop me your address by PM and I'll stick one in the post.

Hi Paul

Again, your detail is very helpful.

Thats very kind of you. Thank you. I'll let you know in a while, as I may try one the afore mentioned blades first if I'm feeling brave...

Cheers.

I've used a variety of blades in my Hawk v2 and have come to the conclusion that my preference lies very much middle of the road.
Feather Soft Guards were way too tuggy and struggled with more than a day's growth.
Kai Captain Pro Touch & Feather Proguards gave me very similar results - nice and smooth, but not quite close enough.
Kai Captain Titan Milds were getting there and were a step up in sharpness whilst maintaining smoothness and are probably my second favourite after Feather Professionals which hit my sweet spot.
Feather Professional Supers were just a bit too aggressive and resulted in me cutting myself for only the second time ever! Got my angle slightly wrong and that was enough to gash my cheek
Haven't tried Shicks yet, but they seem to be highly regarded..

Hi Bluegasoline. Thanks for your reply. I tried the Schick P-30 in my Hawk V2 and General, and to be honest I couldn't understand all the buzz online about those combinations. May be I was expecting too much, but I did not find the shave and results comfortable at all. However the Schick B-20 (in the right injector, I haven't found it, but the results I was getting were promising initially) for injectors is a smooth and efficient blade in a different class to the Schick P-30 IMHO, YMMV.

Hi Paul

I had a mid week AC shave which was comparable to a DE shave, just a bit quicker as my difficult patches were dealt with efficiently in the first and second passes. Very little touch up afterwards. The shave itself seemed comfortable, but I could still feel the blade, and sustained a couple of nicks.

My face was still raw in the evening, and next morning which doesn't happen when I DE shave. No surprise 48 hours later I had a couple of ingrown hairs from this combination. Not too big of a deal though, as I'd be ready for a shave on day four.

Although I think a subsequent shave with the General and Kai Captain Original runs the risk of my skin thinning IMHO. It seems to be the norm for me when AC shaving. Therefore I think an AC shave once a week might work? Or once every two weeks? But the risk must be worth the reward (better than a DE shave), otherwise whats the point?

I suspect that you may need to develop a lighter touch when using an AC/SE. I have a number of them I can complete a week of Shaves with most of them, without any problems. I have virtually given up on DE, as I personally find them less forgiving than AC/SE Razors.

Hi mpf9ret

Thanks for your comment.

If I go any lighter I'd drop the razor with all due respect. I just chalk down to my sensitive skin.

For what its worth, I still see virtue in both DE and SE as its my belief razor and blade combination is key... such as it is. I just wish my wallet could stretch that far!

Just completed my 8th Shave with The Hawk V3-A plate fitted with a Schick Proline blade. All Shaves have been good, but the last 3 have been "Face Strokers". I find it less aggressive than the OC and I can use it as a Daily Shaver without any problems arising. As still working well will not change the blade yet.

Wow, that combination is quite aggressive for me. It truly is different strokes for different folks...

I have just received a separate A Plate to combine with my Hawk V3-OC Razor. Today I thought to have another Shave with the OC but decided to borrow the slightly longer Super Knurl handle [ 90mm] from The Hawk V3-A Plate. The Shave was actually much smoother and comfortable than previous ones with the stock HD Handle !! For those who find the OC a bit fierce a change of handle is worth a go.

I now have a rather interesting Razor set - RR S/S Hawk V3 with A & OC base plates + Super Knurl Handle.

PS Not for Sale
