Razor Brands To Avoid

I saw this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLASSIC-SALON-STRAIGHT-CUT-THROAT-SHAVING-RAZOR-RAZORS-/200562570301 and liked the look of it an nearly asked in here what the difference was between this and something costing 10x as much. I guessed about it not keeping an edge but didn't consider it not taking one in the first place and I've now just thought that it'd probably go rusty too.

For one reason or another I'm not ready to order a straight yet but this forum in all its glory is a very good resource for reading and when the time's right and I see something in BST, I may fire-up the buying finger ;-)

That's what I love about TSR, people including the lurkers study things thare thinking about buying and when the time is right for them they ask questions and 99.9% of the time they get an answer.

Sometimes if someone has had a bad experience with the item then they should also put there comment down, things to consider good or bad, they will find it helpful :s

I should point out that I didn't go ahead and buy this eBay-Enzo razor, I was going to ask first if it was any good and why this cost several times less than a cheap "good one" but I happened to find this thread before I asked the question. So yes, TSR, great, answered my question before I knew it needed answering!

These topics are very helpful. I was looking at one of the 'beware' brands on eBay, glad I read this first. Could anyone give me there opinion on this eBay item number 321186757218. Can't seam to post link or picture

This link might work,

Well that fills me with confidence. Can they not be sharpened? I'm after something quality with something individual about it. Nothing ridiculously expensive, preferably £40-£80 Any suggestions

Hi All

Ok this has kind of answered a question I was going to post about not being able to get a good enough edge on my straight razors.

Cheap and off of eBay come to mind lol

As someone who has only been into straight razor shaving for a few months I am getting on pretty well with my shavette and double edged razor. What would you suggest for my first proper razor?

Regards

There are a few members here who I've seen put up some excellent looking restored razors at around the £80 mark. I've seen cheaper ones two but you'll get something more individual if you pay more. Put a post in BST and I'm sure someone will help you out.

I only use straights occassionaly but the most important thing is to go from someone reputable so that you know the edge is shave ready and that any problems can be sorted through adjusting technique, prep etc. After that it's usually recommended to go with something 5/8 or 6/8 with a rounded point and a fairly hollow grind.

Bigjohn I'm in the exact same situation, like you I just want to make sure I buy something of reasonable quality

First of all, if you want something in that price bracket, it pays to post in the BST (buy, sell, trade) section of the forum because you can place better reliance on anyone you deal with here, than an Ebay gamble. You may find that there are razors available from individuals or the likes of me who refurbish as a hobby and sell on.

There are a small number of UK web sites that deal in refurbished razors (I'm excluding new razors as they are generally out of that price range) such as the Strop Shop, Invisible Edge and Taylor's 1000.

As regards advice on what you should be looking for in a starter straight, go for something like 5/8" or 6/8" - some people recommend round point, although I think you should be able to manage any shape within reason. Neil Miller posted some additional advice at the top of the straight razor section so this is worth a look.

Finally, on the subject of Ebay bargains, as Neil said at the beginning of this thread - if it looks too good to be true, it is.

Hi All again

Thanks for all this help,my budget for this would probably be up to £100.

Some of the entry level Dovo razors look tempting but most places seem to be sold out of these?

Regards

In your budget range you will get a new 5/8 or 6/8 Revisor.
Heres the website http://www.revisor-solingen.de/index.html

I would take a Revisor over a Dovo or Theirs Issard any day! They come shave ready.
Dont look at the rarities section, it has some serious wallet damaging razors there ;)

Good luck!
