Rate The Last Film You Watched

Other than Batman the Lego Movie, and Storks, that I watched recently with my Son. The last film I watched was "Death at a Funeral". I forgot the last time I laughed so much at a film. Very good, and always better when you don't expect half of the gags that unravel. Absolutely worth a watch.

Looks like great fun and what a superb cast!

Downloaded yesterday, I'll probably watch it this week end. I like Brit' dark humour comedy.

Das Boot - The Director`s Cut.
For me, apart from "Band of Brothers", "The Pacific", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Master and Commander", "All quite on the Western front", "Waterloo", "Apocalypse Now" and "Platoon", one of the greatest war movies ever made.

Well I wouldn't put the first two in the same league (just Septic propaganda about how they won WWII all on their own:confused:) and Master and Commander was pretty poor. For me, Das Boot is the best war film ever made by quite a margin.

Actually, I just remembered that I visited the studio (Bavaria in Munich) in the 80's during a school trip in Germany. The cameraman got an Oscar (he got injured while filming...). The U-boat decor is just 11 metres long in fact, but very tight and compact.

To me, Hollywood movies, albeit very entertaining, are quite far from historic reality...

You should have a look at Stalingrad, the German film of 1993 (not like the "westernesque" Annaud's Stalingrad/Enemy at the gate or the later Russian Stalingrad of 2013, both are good though).

Then, if you are not easily shocked, the Russian Come and see (1985) is also a very good film (it's rather for a mature audience):

It's about the Dirlwanger SS group atrocities in Bielorussia during WWII.

I was just about to mention Come and See. I saw it on Channel 4 in my teens (can't remember the exact year) but it stayed with me for years. The way it was shot (film stock maybe) was as if someone had filmed my nightmares. David Lynch's (The Grandmother) early short films look similar too.

It's a truly horrific film. I've watched it once since, around fives ago and it's still as powerful and disturbing as the first time I saw it.

I'm in bed ill today, so I just watched Stalingrad. Superb film. German film-makers always seem to portray the futility and pity of war alonside the savagery and violence.

I have watched Death at a funeral. Really funny. :D

Here is one of my favourite old films. Little world of Don Camillo.
Both, Fernandel and Gino Cervi are such great actors and the film shows a good insight of Italy in the early 50ies.

The whole series (6 films) is broadcast regularly (likely each year...) in France, so as the Sissi's with Romy Schneider...
Although I enjoyed them as a child, I've watched them too many times.
The thing is that although Fernandel is supposed to play an Italian priest, in the French version, he's got his own voice and thus his Provence/South East France accent...

If you like Fernandel, my favourite are (but you probably know them):
- The Cow and I (a French POW escaped form Germany with his best friend, a cow...)
- Ali Baba and the forty thieves
- François 1er (Francis the 1st, in English?), a guy finds himself in the 16th century with his dictionary...
- La cuisine au beurre (Alles in butter), a restaurateur comes back from the war, after spending some time in Austria, to find his wife married to another man who has taken over his restaurant. One cooks with butter, whereas the other one cooks with oil...

Funnily enough, Bourvil compares the brush on Fernandel's Austrian hat to a shaving brush.

Battle of Teutoburg Forest.

Arminius - born as the son of a Cheruscan, abducted as a pawn of the Romans, and raised as a soldier, he returns to subdued Germania under Emperor Augustus. He makes himself the leader of the revolt against Rome, resulting in the destruction of the legions of Varus in the year 9 AD.

I think, truly one of the best ancient Roman Empire documentaries. For those who are also interested, highly recommended.

The Cure for Wellness - a bit of a Shutter Island meets Dr Frankenstein and a lot of I know what's going to happen... but well delivered and kept creepy. Yeah! 7/10 ... worth a watch, worth writing about. Perhaps not one for the collection.

The Rum Diary
A nice and funny movie just to watch and relax, which brings you to Puerto Rico in the times before the Cuba crisis. I like it most because of Michael Rispoli playing Bob Sala the photographer. Reminds me of the good old times in that job, living and having lot of parties in communes in the 80ies. :D
