Rogue One

Brilliant film. Planning a second viewing. A slightly darker look into the Star Wars universe. More than enough nods to A New Hope. Might not be part of the 9 main stories but very much a part of the greater story line.

Would have been better if the snot nose kid that had obviously been dragged there to give an excuse for its Dad to watch didn't kick the back of my seat most the way through.

Rogue one - Very impressive digital effects/graphics. Little long as has been mentioned (personal preference) but would have no qualms seeing it again. Was very tired, however, which probably made the film feel longer than it was. 8/10

P.s. @Cristobal - what's your best time with the Rubix cube? :D I'm out of practice currently but best timed is 36s...

You're way better than me, my best time is 1 minute and 6s timed about a year ago. Since then I only solve once a day to keep the algs fresh in my mind; I was planning to learn the 2OLL and PLL, but I procrastinate...

*Was, marginally better ;)
Sorry to deviate the thread, chaps! :D I learnt some of OLL and some of PLL which sped me up a heap! I think I'll get round to learning the rest soon - I've a week off work next week so I'll spend some time doing that! :D

Let the games begin.

Saving Mr Banks

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson

The story of getting Mary Poppins from page to screen. Missed this on the cinema but thought it would be good from the trailer. It was. Anyone with a good memory of the film will probably get more from it but either way its not a requirement.

Me and MrsB had a proper cuddly night on the sofa and really enjoyed it.

The Accountant (2016).
Rather liked it. Good acting and a storyline that felt a bit fresh. 8/10 for me.

Masterminds
Ok film 6/10

Rogue One
The 5 last minutes are epic, the rest is OK. 6.5/10

Bad Santa 2
Just bad a second time, a few good (gross) gags. 4/10

Absolute Power.

A bit of an old one. I finished reading the book by David Baldacci last week and really enjoyed it so I thought I'd try the film.

Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman. What could go wrong?

Film was shit.
1/10.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Brian Cox

Not really into horror films as such but MrsB loves them. When I saw that Brian Cox stars in this plus the director was the same as Troll Hunter well I was interested.

Ok its a horror so there is a suspension of belief involved but its not your average slasher or paranormal bullshit. It was actually quite good. 6.5/10

Maigret (2016)
Two stories;
- Maigret sets a trap, and
- Maigret's Dead Man

Sure, it was a made for tv movie(s) but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great to see Rowan Atkinson in a more serious role - one that I think he really pulled off.
8/10 (would had been a 9 if it hadn't been for Katie Lyons who I rather dislike ever since Bluestone 42).

If you like a bit of retro-styled detective stories with great acting and a nice plot - check it out.

Trailer:

I watched the second episode yesterday and the previous one last year. Although Atkinson is brilliant and the reconstitution very realistic, to me Atkinson's interpretation was somehow clunky... The Brits have Miss Marple, Poirot (albeit Belgian), the French have Commissaire Maigret, their national detective created by Georges Simenon, who was Belgian. In my opinion the TV movies produced by ITV failed to recreate the dark atmosphere of Simenon, to which the tall heavy silhouette of Maigret smoking his pipe contributes. The physical appearance and the behaviour don't really match the Maigret of the books and the previous films. It's probably due to the Brit and French approaches that are radically different I guess.

If you have the chance to have a glance at the real thing, you'll see the difference. The most recent adaptation (a TV series that lasted over 20 years) is likely the closest.
The theme of the opening credits tells every thing (usually a murder that will unveil deep dark sordid secrets):
