Put me straight

Great stuff, Fido - well done for persevering! It can only get better.

As an aside, I took a trip away from home recently and when I got to my destination I unpacked my stuff and found I had a strop, stone, alum bar... but no razor. I always forget something (a photo shoot - forgot the film; a postcard fair - forgot my money, a beer festival - forgot who I was, etc etc), so I had to buy some three-bladed disposables. The shave was joyless - I found myself dreaming of being back home!

Sad, isn't it.

Regards,
Neil

This is really encouraging for me, Fido. I had a pretty crap shave with my grandad's straight in the week (my fault, not the razor's; I was tired and not concentrating on what I was doing), and I did for a moment wonder what on earth I was doing trying to shave with something so terrifying. But your words have given me the spur to keep trying.

Having said that, I shaved tonight with my Fatboy and oh man it was sweet.

I thought it about time I posted an update on my experiences.

I seem to be using my straight rather less than I intended. I really have not been infected by the enthusiasm of experienced straight shavers. My technique has improved and I am less cautious razor in hand. I get really good shaves but still need to use my DE for that final against the grain pass. I tried straight shaving better to understand the enthusiasm for it among the aficionados.
Some people enjoy stropping. I find it a chore. Some people enjoy honing. I'm really not interested. I find using a straight is more difficult than using a DE.
So my personal experience tells me that if it comes down to the pure pleasure of shaving - DE still has it for me. Straight shaving is a pleasant challenge, and I'm really glad I've tried it. But looking ahead, it's going to be occasional use of the straight and regular use of DE - unless one day something magically clicks into place as suggested by some. I really do have my doubts. But I will persist.

Hi Fido

I am sorry to see that post I thought that you would have converted to straights only. Never mind as long as you use them occasionally it is better than not at all.
One thing that I will say is good on you for giving it a decent time period to come to the conclusion that DE is for you. Lots of people use a straight once or twice and realise that the learning curve is steep and just go back to whatever they were used to.
