Proraso Pre Shave Cream

I love the Proraso line and really had high hopes for this. It smells great, and I have used it pre-shave only. I put it on my beard before showering and it's quite pleasant, but I don't think it adds much to my shave. I will use the jar up, but I will not be likely to purchase more.
These days, I'm following leisure guys recommendation and use the glycerine soap as a pre-shave. If I'm feeling particularly fastidious, I will use a shave oil to do a polishing pass at the conclusion of my shave. Zirh botanical shaving oil is good for this, but probably no better than olive oil would be.

I also use glycerine pre-shave soap (specifically, this stuff). As I said, I regard the Proraso as beard softness maintenance while I'm loading my brush or lathering in a vessel, and as an extra layer of lubrication under the lather. I wouldn't try to rely on it as the only part of pre-shave prep. Then again, due to disability, I don't shower before I shave, so glycerine soap, hot cloth and Proraso is needed, IMO, to prep my growth adequately.

Hi Chris, how do you use the Ach Brito soap? - just like a regular soap and washing off prior to shaving, or do you leave it on for a bit etc. ?

Moisten face and soap puck, rub on face to transfer some soap to growth. Lay soap down in lid of tin to dry, lather the soap on my face with my hands for around 30 seconds, then rinse off with hot water. It leaves a very faint film of glycerine on the face which seems to aid the subsequent hot, wet cloth in softening the growth. After 1-1 1/2 minutes with a hot, wet cloth/flannel, I rub on some Proraso to stop my face drying-out and the hair hardening while I load my brush or lather in a vessel (depending on whether I'm face-lathering or not), then dampen my face again to make sure the Proraso film is lubricating, and apply lather/face-lather over that. By the time I've completed the first pass and rinsed, the Proraso is entirely removed, but I find it just helps on the WTG pass when the hair is at its longest.

Thanks for the detailed description. That's very similar to what I do except that I don't use the pre-shave soap. While I'm in the shower I shampoo and condition my stubble while I'm doing that to my hair, so that might have a similar effect to the pre-shave soap.
I have used Ach Brito bath soap which is pretty good so I might try out their pre-shave soap some day. Nanny's Silly Soap also has pre-shave soap which sounds enticing too.

Took delivery of the white sensitive pre-shave on Sat and i was surprised at how menthol-y it was. Nothing like the after shave balm in the same range. I like it though.

I have used it three days now and I like the glide it is giving me and I think it's assisting in cutting down nicks. Definiteky not feeling so dried out afterwards which is good.

Seems like it's going to be very economical as I find I need hardly any to make a suitable layer on my mush!

Using the balm as a post-shave moisturiser is good too but I'm not sure I'd use this pre-shave in a post-shave situation. Tried it that way Saturday but the menthol hit was too much and masked the scent of my cologne.

One tub lasted me around 200 shaves. Definitely a great pre shave i find it too oily as a post.
I have used arko (cream) which is denser, thicker and prpbably contains more oils but it absorbs quicker and leaves less oil to the touch on the skin. Strange.

I've been using the green pre-shave since I started this malarky and think it has been a part of every shave I've had at home since then. I ended up buying two 500ml trade tubs of the old cream (before the reformulation) and have just now finished the last one off (as Nishy says - it lasts an age!) I'm just getting started on a 300ml tub of the new stuff and my impressions are pretty positive - on the one hand, the menthol is not a pronounced as before (still pretty good, but not the same icy blast) but the skin care seems to be even better. I'm pleased with the results.

I use it as a pre-shave always and post-shave before I jump in the shower if I'm feeling a bit tender. I never leave it on the skin for a long time though - it leaves a definite graininess on the skin that normal balms don't. Kind of like leaving soap on the skin after a wash.

I've just started using the RED proraso pre shave. It's lovely stuff, and this morning I had a revelation. I normally do a 3 pass shave. This morning, having a bit more time on my hands, I applied the pre shave before each pass - it was just lovely. My skin felt deliciously smooth, and the shave was very close.(Muhle R41, Rhino blade & ProRaso RED soap). I don't know if it was the ritual of taking so much time over shaving, or whether those individual applications genuinely helped, but I'll definitely be repeating the experience...

I normally use Proraso pre-shave (white) sensitive and like it a lot. Thankfully I've just finished off a tub of Proraso (green) which I have not enjoyed so much. I find the menthol too strong which makes my skin go slightly red but more importantly it completely overpowers the scent of the soap.

I've been considering Proraso red, which I'll probably buy sooner or later, but I'm wondering if I will have the same issues. I don't expect my skin to react but was thinking that the sandalwood scent might overpower the soap scent. Of course for some earthy soap scents I don't think this would be a problem - might even go well with and enhance the soap scent.

How do find the strength of the red pre-shave, Stephen?

I've got some of the red coming in the post. I remain less than totally convinced that Proraso pre barba cream really is worth the effort/expense, but I plan to enjoy at least the one jar before I finally decide.

I've got to admit that their pre barba cream is the only Proraso product to disappoint me so far. Hell, even their aerosol shave creme is good stuff!

That's a toughie for me to answer, as I love the scent of RED, but I also use the RED soap, so it just intensifies with the layers. You could always buy a tub, (great value at less than £8), and if you don't like it, stick it on BST where I can pick it up... :icon_razz:
