Pre shave oil

Does anyone find that after applying pre shave oil, their lather suffers? Does pre shave oil really make any difference to the shave, or will a good slick soap suffice?

Good question. I wonder that every time I shave. I always use my Frankenoil ( I think that's what you say) which is Grapeseed and Castor oil plus other oils and stuff. ...and wonder if the lather is affected by it. In addition to the oil I apply glycerine and a soap mixture as well as the usual hot water spray before application. I don't actually wash this lot off as such but after a good rub a dub with the hands it does seem to diminish.

I'll look here to see what the old hands advise. If indeed they advise anything :)

Just checked to see what's in Murdock.

Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Citral, Geraniol, Isopropyl Myristate, Limonene, Linalool, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Parfum, Propolis Extract, Prunus, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Triticum Vulgare(Wheat) Germ Oil.

Not sure that tells me very much, except there's more in that than there is in mine :)

Murdock is the best I've found. Expensive, yes, but you only need a tiny amount, and I got mine on offer.
Does it do any good? Controversial but I think it helps sometimes. Anyhow I love the feel and scent of Murdock (Avalon) so I use it first thing out of the shower and let it soak in while I prepare the lather etc. I don't wash it off, just lather over.
I've not found it affects the lather at all.

Helpful...ta for that.

I can't comment on Murdock as I haven't used it but I have used a few oils.

If it's effecting your lather then you are using to much. Different amounts are needed depending on the oils you are using. But I would say no more than 5-6 drops for a light oil. Most oils I use are effective at 3-4.

It is a big debate in the wet shaving community "Are oils effective, Do they help?"
To me they do and they are a nice part of the shave. The best I have come across so far are Maggards closely followed by Stirling.

I got a 15ml oil pump from murdock free with the shave, lasted 3 months with shaving every other day. As mentioned before you only need one squirt. I think the viscosity of pre shave oil has a large role to play, i used to use a massage oil blend from Thailand. But that was to thick and clogged up my razor.

I think a pre shave cream/oil is now important with straights.

I definitely find preshave oil helps, otherwise I tend to find the razor likes to "stick" on my face. Although I got sick of buying what in reality is veg oil with some scent in it. So I bought some pure tea tree oil and diluted it in a mix of coconut oil and olive oil. The olive oil was to stop the coconut oil solidifying. Tried it today. I smell nice the coconut oil has helped make my skin soft and in total coat me about 2 quid for about 200ml of the stuff :)

What ratio and ml would you use for making your own oil? Could you just use olive oil and a scent?

Have you got the sample Frankenoil from the PIF yet smooze? It's just a mix of whatever oils took my fancy plus some Menthol and Eucalyptus. Some fellas buy pre shave oils for £30 for 100ml or others use Nuage shaving oil from supermarkets for £1. The Nuage is simple and excellent (especially for £1). Others do just as you say and use Extra Virgin Olive oil and mix something nice to sniff into it but ideally I'd mix it with, say, Castor or Grapeseed or Argan etc etc. You don't use so much Castor as the others as it's quite thick. My own recipe is probably somewhere here on the site...it's got about a dozen different carrier oils and essential oils plus, as I say, some Menthol and Eucalyptus. I think it's referred to on the cheap smellies thread, (just checked...post #97). If you Google "home made shaving oil" or something similar you'll see loads of different versions....there's no science in it as long as you use run of the mill readily available oils with something smelly in it. Don't use essential oil undiluted on the skin, as per the instructions on the bottles. I usually use a skin cream with oil - but that's just me...have a bit of a fiddle and enjoy experimenting. An easy option (apart from the Nuage) is this Garnier oil... http://www.superdrug.com/Garnier/Garnier-Body-Ultimate-Beauty-Oil/p/529050#.VP4x4nysXK0?utm_source=affiliatewindow I mentioned it to fellow member rola truck and he bought some and likes it too.

Nah not got yet. I use to use olive oil in my face so you reckon if i used olive oil with drops of a scent is enough? Id have to see what scents i could get. Reckon i could mix your pif with olive oil. Say a small bottle worth?

You certainly could mix olive oil with my one but as it already has Grapeseed, Castor, Coconut, Jojoba, Sweet Almond and Argan oils plus Bergamot, Sandalwood, Orange, Lemon, Lavender, TeaTree, Eucalyptus, Patchouli Essential oils in it I'm not sure why you would want to...I think it's got enough in it already...but by all means experiment to see what serves you best. As mentioned, I usually see the use of Extra Virgin oil...but don't actually know why. Sorry about that. I deff. would add something smelly to it rather than use it on it's own. For perfumes see the Perfume Shop as mentioned in the other thread (stuartc has mentioned it). Or see seller Naissance on Amazon for essential oils. As mentioned by RedHorseman, Tea TreeOil is a good choice (buy it in Savers for economy). The sample is on its way...maybe tomorrow or Tuesday given it's Easter.
