Closed Pass Around: Hone Type 15 - Completed

This has made me have a bit of a quandary.

Is this machined and made to such tight tolerances that the difference in lather thickness or amount put on the face effects the shave?

I really don't know how to take this?

One one hand it shows epic design to be able to shave with just some lube, but, add some lather and the balde then fails to cut as close resulting in more passes and quicker regrowth?

I'm confused, is it a good thing or bad thing?

Is this the main reason for people stating a little more aggression is needed?
I think this is very much "Horses for courses", I cant say the oil shave was any better or worse in quality, 6 hours later it feels pretty much how it felt with soap during the 3 passaround shaves I had, which for me were very good, it was the actual feel of the shave itself that differed and "Felt" more aggressive, even though when Alum block was applied post shave I had zero sting after 3 passes.

Fourth (and Final) Shave With The Hone Type 15

I started off with the usual prep of hot water and Dr. Squatch Pine Tar Exfoliating soap and then I massaged 4nr drops of Mercer + James Classic Shaving Oil into the beard.

I purposefully didn't shave yesterday (Saturday) as (i) I CBA after I'd started on the Spitfire, and, of more concern to us here (ii) I wanted to see how the Type 15 would cope with a couple of days of growth.

In contemplating the unique mildness of the razor, I thought a good match for it would be a Feather Hi Stainless blade (one of my favourite blades, but I do acknowledge its marmite syndrome).

Anyway, having dismissed the brief but searing thought that I was courting disaster with a Feather blade and just shaving oil combination, I set to work. Amazingly, as it turned out, there was absolutely nothing to worry about - no irritation, no tugging, no redness nor weepers, just a pure and simple almost BBS 2 pass shave. This is made all the more incredible given I used a fair degree of pressure on the razor (which can be regulated using auditory feedback) and furthermore, using short strokes, I had to go over the same area a few times to compensate for the razor's inherent lack of efficiency.

I have to say, this was a most excellent shave - the lack of drama in stark contrast to 'normal' use of a Feather razor blade which, whilst ultra-sharp, demands absolute and total concentration. With the Home Type 15, you effectively just point and shoot - I'm not saying you entirely submit to your mind's wandering but, you do not have to maintain Krypton Factor powers of concentration throughout the shave - there are those of you who will know what I mean here. Using the Type 15 with the Feather was relaxing - and I cannot believe I am typing that, but it is exactly how I felt at the time.

So there you have it - make of it what you will...;)

Suffice it to say, thank you again to Andreas @riverrun and Andrew @Hone for the chance to partake of this pass around - I really enjoyed it. I have a brand new Mercer + James Classic Shave Oil bottle which I'll put in the pass around parcel for anyone's use if they'd like to try the Type 15 with shave oil.

Final Thoughts

I'm going to review my thoughts / observations etc. and will do a summary in the next day or two. The Hone Type 15 pass around parcel will be forwarded to Matt @MPH presently.

Thanks, Martin.
The Hone can tame a Feather blade nicely. I used a Feather on the second of my two maiden shaves with the Hone. The Hone is not an R41 :)
Many thanks for including the shave oil in the pass around.
I'm looking forward to your summary.
