Closed Pass around: Black Standard Razor

Please take me off the list as life is a bit too complicated for simple old me at the moment. I need to take things easy and one day at a time, etc. Many thanks for doing the passaround, though. :D

Hey what's doin over there,

Yeah, I hope to keep reading your forum posts buddy. Saw you tried the Fatboy a bunch and was glad that got done. Nice job there giving it a run. I will look at who's next if anyone.

Be a pleasure seeing you stick around a while longer if possible,

Martin

Reading your often hilarious posts, Martin, is entirely my pleasure and one of the reasons I will be sticking around. Kevy is next on the Fatboy list - we have corresponded and it will be winging its way to him via RM recorded delivery tomorrow. ;)

And I've not ruled out Le Tubby as my last shave with the 34c was worse than yon Fatboy n' Feather combo. I reckon a month solid of shaves would get that beastie working for me just fine. It is beautifully built with a lovely heft but money is at a premium so we'll see what the new year brings. Perhaps the best vintage Gillette I've yet used and I'm very grateful for the chance to have had a play with it. :D

I've had my farewell shave with the Standard razor and what a crap shave it was. I picked a tuggy PolSilver blade (rarely happens), couldn't get a decent lather out of Castle Forbes (never happens) and nicked myself (happens). At least my face is now finally really smooth after 3 days with the Pils. And now it turns out that the local post office is closed for the day 'due to computer problems'. I'll send it off tomorrow.

I walked back to the post office today only to find that now they are closed for two weeks due to refurbishment. They must have known yesterday, but didn't have a note up then. Why would they? I figured that a two week delay was a bit much so I walked home and drove to the next bigger post office and the Black Standard is now on its way to @Whosthedaddy

It might not photograph well. It is just plain black. As Douglas Adams wrote in his little known 'The Barbershop at the End of the Universe':

"That," he said, "that... is really bad for the eyes."
It was a razor of classic, simple design, very clean, very sleek. There was just one remarkable thing about it.
"It's so... black!" said Ford Prefect. "You can hardly make out its shape... light just seems to fall into it!"
The blackness of it was so extreme that it was almost impossible to tell how close you were standing to it.
"Your eyes just slide off it..." said Ford in wonder.

Its arrived, thanks for setting this free upon us to try.

I like the weight, feels very nice in the hands albeit no grip on the handle so could be interesting when wet. The handle and head meet in a very reassuring way and a nice aluminium 'ting' when the thumb is moved across the safety bar.

Should be an interesting shave tomorrow not just with the razor but also another Calani soap to try.

Roll on tomorrow...

I never had problems with grip on the Standard when wet. I seems the same wet or dry.
I chucked in the Calani soap, as I have a lot of samples I ordered once, but they don't agree with South East London granite water (either that or it's me). The only hard soaps that work for me are Faena Mastic and De Vergulde Hand. So, enjoy.

Initial impressions are good.

The head of the razor feels nice against the skin and has a subtle audible feedback. The angle is natural and seems to cut the stubble in an efficient way.

Its not too aggressive or harsh as I've read some say and not mild either, very much a middle of the road shaver.

I did use a 3rd pass more out wanting to as opposed to needing to and caused a little bit of irritation in places I'd have expected hence a little alum. My bad, not the razor or the soap.

Oriental Plum by Calani is probably my fave scent bar none. This Earl Grey scent is nice but doesn't even begin to knock the plum off top spot. The performance is the same though, it's not thick and creamy but thick yoghurt like, very silky and smooth.

Day 2 with the Standard

Picking it up from the side and this thing gets a little chilly when left out overnight on the sink. Thankfully a quick dip in hot water and it soon warms up.

Again another unremarkable shave in a remarkable way? It seems to have the aggressiveness of the R41 in a safe to use package. Dont get me wrong a slight bounce or mis judged angle and i managed to catch my neck a little but no more drama and certainly have the confidence to use it with some relaxation.

The blade didn't seem as sharp today as its first use, odd with the Lada blade as had some good experiences with this in the past?
