Closed Pass Around: Asylum RX - Finished.

Hi Everyone,

Firstly I would like to apologise for my lack of communication whilst having this razor. I believe posting your thoughts, and your journey with the razor is part and parcel of taking part in these pass arounds, but the arrival coincided with one of the busiest weeks I have had workwise for a long time and I'm going on holiday on Monday, so I simply haven't had time (or energy) to post. I feel bad, so sorry!

Anyway.... I have now posted the razor on and I am very grateful for the opportunity to try such a top end razor. It is one that I thought I may end up buying one day, so this trial was particularly useful for me.

So.... As per my other posts to be fair I didn't really get along with this razor. It is too harsh for me. I could probably have found the correct angle if I tried, but I have other razors that suit me better.

...... And this brings me onto something that I really wanted to photo and discuss... But (you guessed it) I didn't have time to photo!........Finding the correct angle.

This to my mind should be intuitive. I am used to using the mongoose, and this has a big slanted head that you put on your face and the blade is held in the correct angle to remove the fluff from your face. Simples. The Asylum however has a flat area that would naturally sit against your face, BUT to my eyes (and face feel) the blade is NOT aligned to actually touch your face. It will merely float a mm or so over your skin. Maybe I've gone mad, so I would like to hear from others, but simply holding the razor and eyeballing it looks like the angle is just wrong. I therefore was adjusting the angle on my face to get it to cut, but obviously went a little too far as it felt so rough. For a top end (top price) razor this is just weird.

Also I love the way the blade locks into place as it's different.... BUT ... although it is a nice piece of engineering, I don't see any benefits over the usual two plates clamped together, and it must cost a fortune to machine, thus the high price of the razor. It's nice, but I'm not sure it adds anything for the extra price.

In short, it's lovely to behold but not for me. I am interested to see if a version two is released which alters the blade angle a bit.

Many thanks to all involved in making this happen it is greatly appreciated.

Matt

Great write up Matt, it's a shame it wasn't for you but not all razors suit everyone. No need to apolagise for your lack of communication , if your busy your busy and your end report was comprehensive enough. :)

Well, just had my last shave with it, and I am sitting here with a mildly glowing skin and a single mini weeper. I've only used xpec and a feather pro and todays shave has been with the alumigoose doing the other half of my face I can really tell the difference. Usage wise I've been comparing it to the goose as thats the only similar razor I have experience with.

I find the blade loading design not so great, I'm also struggling to find the 'ease' whilst shaving that I seem to find without problem with the goose, I just can't seem to figure it out. Perhaps More time would improve things, but I am hardly motivated to try so :). Top that off with the razor giving me mild burn after every shave leads to:

Overall it's an 'OK' razor that I don't seem to get a long with and certainly won't be buying.
However thanks very much for letting me try it, definitely once again proving the point of the pass around! I'll move it on as soon as I get the next address! @barber bear

Received the RX today, looking forward to having a first go tommorow!

OK so I would have to say that I had a good experience with the RX, but not my favourite SE.

The head design looked to be nimble and easy to use initially, but I found it to be the opposite. I have come from mostly DEs and a couple of SEs, so the feels a bit awkward. I think as well, that I would much prefer it to be made of aluminium like my General. I get along better with these larger heads when they are light.

The shave was pretty good though, when I got the right blade. First one I tried was a Kai guard, which was very rough and inefficient for me. But then I tried a Feather pro and it was like a different razor, I guess that's the nature of these AC razors. Also tried a Kai Captain blade and that was excellent like the Feather. I still prefer the General though, as it gives me an even closer shave but also smoother.

The build is very good also, I do l like the mechanism, it sets itself apart from the other guys. Not a massive fan of the original handle, but it does fit with the head nicely. I did find though, that some of my other handles didn't fit well with the head, some wouldn't screw all the way up and left the head a bit rattly.

All in all I did enjoy my shaves with the RX, it was definitely nice to try something this different. However, I wouldn't go and buy myself one as the General gives me better and more enjoyable shaves. I may consider it more if there was an aluminium version.
