One month back to DS shaving with Rockwell 6S, lather tends to die

I have yet to try another soap - currently using Taylor's cream but probably not working it enough.

You might get better results building the lather in a bowl. Any old bowl, - a cereal bowl will do.
Put a large almond size amount of cream in the bowl and set to with your "damp, not wet" brush. After 20 seconds or so, if you don't have a good lather and it seems a bit dry, add a few drops of water and set to again for another 20 or so seconds. Repeat until you have glossy, peaky lather.

Palmolive Shave stick is a very good, inexpensive soap that you might consider trying.
Simply rub it on to your wet stubble and build the lather on your face - same as above, "damp" brush to start and add more water by dipping the very tips of your brush in the basin

You don't need fancy smelling soaps/creams to make good lather

Cris' method is decent.
If you use too much water, just add more soap.

Why not put your name down for the Newbie box. Link in my signature or the Welcome section of the forum. You'll get to try a number of soaps and blades for just the cost of postage to the next person. The English Wickham soap for example lathers like a dream.

As a newbie to this site (but seriously old) I splashed out on the Rockwell because I had no measure of how tough my beard actually is. I quickly got into the swing and found that setting 4 on the Rockwell was needed for a decent shave (perhaps 2 for a second 'evening' shave), so it's relatively tough as well as growing in all directions. Because I am hooked on Geo F Trumper's glycerine Face Food I tried Lubrico glycerine soap for a while but found that the lather died very quickly. What do you think is my problem - unbranded synthetic brush (although it's well made, big and handsome), the soap or my lathering technique? I am getting fantastic shaves, though, with Dorco 301 bladed (so much more comfortable than Feather) finished off with an alum block rub, then Geo F's Face Food.

OP, I'm running a PIF so if you want some more soaps to try out for free, include your name and you might win them.

I just uploaded a quick lather tutorial video in the help section.
@Boab is that you in the video? I'm absolutely atrocious at bowl lathering. What pressure do you use on the brush in the bowl? Light painting type pressure or hard to make it splay?

Yeah I made it the other day as a quick guide. Difficult to describe how much pressure but it's definitely more splay than light painting.

I had a play with some Tabac in my bowl last night and got better results after watching your video. I'd describe the pressure I used as 2/3 of the way towards full splay. Reckon that sounds about right?

What was interesting was the amount of times I added water to the soap. I think I've been underestimating the amount of water required previously (I've probably not realised the amount of water normally available to the soap on my face when I face lather).

Also, you're very sharply dressed when you shave

I vary the pressure, at the start I am not using much but when it starts to increase in volume and I go fast with the swirling then I am splaying the brush full.
It's also years of practice which enables me to shave while wearing a shirt :LOL:
