DE shaving, use dished shaving soap (Taylors of Old Bond St., currently)
Not used any pre-shave - does it really make a difference ?
In case relevant I'm in a soft water area.

If so I need to buy some more soap .. and considering D. R. Harris Arlington soap
and thinking I 'might' try the D. R. Harris Arlington pre-shave lotion.

Comments ? advice?

Yes and no. What is important is proper prep. Make sure the stubble is ready for the razor. A pre-shave is one weapon in the arsenal. Have a shower, hot towel, face scrub, pre-shave, put lather on your face and let it sit for a few minutes, shaving oil. Pick two to three of those and you're shaving on gas (or whatever the saying is). Pre-shaves help, but there are alternatives. Whatever feels best for you. Experiment.

Just having a shower is only one of

Pick two or three. Shower and pre-shave. Face scrub and hot towel. Shower, hot towel, shaving oil. Etc... Having a shower is a pre-shave treatment :) You'll learn when your face is ready and what you like best.

After trying a lot of stuff, that's products and methods, I've come to find that simplifying really is the way ... go back to where it started: wash in hot water to clean and prepare, good lather and let it sit for a couple of minutes before refreshing and getting on with your shave. Simple wash off, cold water splash, optional skin toner (witch hazel) and a good aftershave splash.

One pre/post shave treatment I really enjoyed, although don't think it did anything, was Edwin Jagger's mentholated. Just a dot on your chin after the cold water splash and massage it over the shaved area. Lovely and cooling.

Yeah, yeah ... hot water does seem to soften skin and beard, and letting the lather sit really gets it just right for shaving. I guess a pre-shave product helps with the impatient, but in the end it's going to take the same amount of time. I prefer the simplified version, although my SOTD posts do read as epics, I know :D

Arlington soap has a great scent. I found to be less slick than others. So a pre shave would be useful. I personally would grab some olive oil throw in a few essential oils and then enjoy. Or if you want a good pre shave ready made I would suggest Murdock pre shave oil.

My pre-shave consists of a shower and "Kyle's Method", whereby I lather up and let it baste under a hot towel for three minutes. Rinse off with warm water before applying shave lather.
The best actual treatment, physical product I've used is coconut oil. Very light amount is all you need.
