Non league football

Hello everyone,

Wondering if there are any non league football fans here on TSR?

I'm becoming increasingly disillusioned with the league team followed for 20 years. Going to my first non league game in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to enjoying football once again!

I go and watch my local team Southport a handful of times a season. National League North. Poor league form but got through final qualifying round of FA Cup on Sat despite terrible refereeing, so in the hat for 1st round proper. They could do with a bit of a cup run. Attendance of seven hundred odd last game. What team are you looking at following?

Going to watch Guiseley. The team I have supported for years, Bradford City are being ripped apart by their owners. It's heart breaking, and I'm voting with my feet & my wallet!

My 10 year old daughter is desperate to go to her first football match. Thought a first non league match for both of us would be a nice thing to do.

Ah, same league. We are propping up the table! It's a real shame when owners cock up a club. Mate is a Newcastle fan and I feel really sorry for fans of that club. Mike Ashley needs to invest into the club properly or admit he's made a hash of it all and walk away. Enjoy your match. I take my sons (13 & 10) to some games. The youngest gets in for one penny. Part of their motivation for coming is a pre match trip to the corner shop by the ground for chocolate on the way in!

im fairly new to non league football. ive been a hartlepool united supporter all my life and last season was our first outside the football league, its been a bit of an eye opener. weve always been lower league, so top end of the football structure hasnt really bothered me too much, i used to go and see sunderland now and again when i was younger and always used to enjoy the big games there. the premiership has pretty much destroyed football as i remember and prefer it, definitely been gentrified at the bigger clubs.

I used to follow Hucknall Town home and away from Workington to Bishops Stortford and from Kings Lynn to Hereford.

Started following them a year or two before they reached the FA Trophy final and for a couple of years after that.

Here's the big problem with non-league football; clubs trying to reach higher divisions than their (potential) fan-base will support.

It's great getting promotions and all that but then you have to make ground alterations, increase admission fees, pay the players more wages.

Eventually the money you have coming through the gate can't cover the club's spending (even Chairmen's pockets are only so deep), the club gets in debt and the club dies.

I've seen it happen at dozens of clubs with centuries of history between them.

Of the local clubs, Basford United will probably be next.

Ideas well above the level sustainable by their fan base. They're eventually going to need 3,000 regular fans paying nearly as much as they would be paying to watch Forest or Notts to cover players wages and ground-building.

They'll be in trouble inside two years.

I do occasionally watch the local team 'Marine' in Crosby Liverpool. Affordable and of course, local. Which are also two reasons I follow St.Helens rugby league.

I have a friend here at work who has recently turned his back on a major premier league team and says he gets more pleasure from his local team in Immingham

Now, this might be a bit off topic, but I find myself losing interest in football in general. I have been a long time FC Bayern fan, a season ticket holder and member, and I never missed a game, be it in the Allianz Arena or on TV, but I find the ever increasing amount of acting, diving and cheating in soccer outright disgusting.

Also, when I look at our national team and their recent failures...all these young kids, they don't care for the jersey and the crest they're wearing. All that's important to them is tattoos, the Gucci clothes, their hair and all the 500.000 € cars at their 10 Mio. € villas. And the coach is oozing with arrogance. When I read that Boateng has his personal hairdresser flown in before a match, I am in utter disbelief. These kids have lost all ties to normal life.

Zipped into a Champions League match yesterday, right in time to see a defender go for a tackle, and the forward just took of like a plane, screaming and rolled around like he was dying, although he wasn't even touched by the defender. The ref sent the guy off with a red card, and as soon as he was leaving the pitch, the other one was miraculously healed. I do not know any other sport where cheating and acting is so blatantly obvious as in soccer, and that is why eventually I'll turn my back on them completely.

Having family in the US, I am quite a bit into US sports, and be it in the NHL, NFL or MLB, there are guys playing hurt everywhere, even with broken bones, or going back into the game after just having had their teeth knocked out...and in soccer a guy is out for weeks with a strained muscle?? Come on!! Or all the crying, when there are two games a week? Look at the NHL or NBA you whimps, they play every 2nd night, with week-long road trips...

Sorry, if this has gotten out of hand a little, but it's making me mad :D

After my stint following Hucknall Town I went back to watching my beloved Leeds United and still make the trek to Elland Rd now and then but honestly, Rugby and Ice Hockey take more of my money than football nowadays for exactly the reasons above.

I love watching football matches from the 60s and 70s on YouTube. Proper bloke's game back then. Played by blokes. Watched by blokes. None of your limp-wristed, namby pamby fairies. No siree.

It's not going to be too long before football becomes a non-contact sport like basketball, or probably more appropriately netball.

Agree. Some of them will playing in curlers next.

I remember watching Norman Hunter going through his fantasy VI. Roy Keane was the only one from recent generations who made the cut
