Newest Synthetic Style: FlatTop

...his handles are foul...

I am not entirely sure what you meant by this bit, but I assume you meant chintzy/cheap. If so, I can understand why he is doing it: to sell brushes. A mere glance at this forum shows the overwhelming amount of people buying directly from Yaqi thereby circumventing the middle man, but also forcing them to either shut their doors or try and compete by buying bulk Chinese handles and gluing bulk Chinese knots into them. He's just trying to make a living IMO.

Yes, I meant revolting, repulsive, offensive etc.

As previously said, I admire his ability to come up with new knot styles but would never personally buy one due to the handles which look like the product of a primary school art project. People obviously buy them otherwise he wouldn't keep selling them, but then The Sun newspaper is also a best seller :p

There is always the option to buy one of his knots and glue into the handle of your choice

Greetings

I do not own a true flat top but I do own one of this companies Quarter Moon brushes which is a 'flattish fan'. I have always thought (I may be wrong) that the object of a fan and more so with a flattop was to get more surface area of bristle (fibre) in contact with the skin without the pressure of mashing, quite whether this actually is the case I do not know as I personally, and I suspect most other users mash the knot onto their skin anyway thus negating that purpose. I can say that my fan does not in practice feel much different to my bulb knots in use.

The words 'great backbone' in relation to this brush (or any other) always worry me as I generally think this is synonymous with 'stiff old bugger' and I like my synthetic knots on the more flexible side. I will say I am thrilled with this companies cashmere knot and to a slightly lesser degree with their synbad, I also own one of their Tuxedo's which is a 'stiffish old bugger' (IMHO)

Regards
Dick.

Very true, some of us are just lazy and want an 'off the shelf' option. Sad thing is we know Yaqi will be selling these in 6 weeks, set in a plethora of handle styles for every taste... Yes QC will be hit and miss compared to APShaveCo but for the minimal outlay that's a risk many of us are willing to take.

Flat top or fan shaped knots are in theory supposed to be better for face lathering as not as much pressure is needed to splay the knot. IMO it works. I say as such as it worked that way for my handsome face using a Tuxedo fan brush and I see no logical reason why the same principle wouldn't apply when using one of different materials. As a matter of fact, I think this would be the perfect enhancement for a dense Cashmere style knot thereby negating the "floppiness" so many bemoan. ;)

Yep, don't like the shape either, reminds of doing the dishes.
