The DE process is gradual reduction of stubble with a number of passes so you may have to adopt a 3 pass routine. Map your stubble so the final pass is against the grain which will give you the closest shave. Having said that you may find two passes acceptable; with the grain followed by cross the grain. Mark Herro {mantic59} shows good technique on ***tube.
It is a learning curve so keep working at it.
