New to wet shaving advice please

Astra sp's, voskhod, gillette rubies, polsilver if you can get them, gillette nacet, gillette silver blue all great blades and should find something you like in that mix. Feather, personna reds maybe worth a look too. As everyone will tell you something different. Blades are very subjective.

I think that the EJ89 is a nicer razor than the Merkur but you'll not go wrong with either. As others have said get a sample pack of blades as they're very subjective.

Personally I'd recommend a synthetic brush, IMO you have to spend quite a bit to get a good badger but you can get a great synth for under £20. Palmolive soap is excellent and cheap as chips.

I genuinely don't think there's that much difference between Maseto brushes off eBay and Simpson "Manchurian" hair. There's even less between Maseto Silvertip and Shavemac D01 3 band. I have both, the latter acquired recently, and I can't tell the difference

You'll get a great Maseto for £35-45.not much more than a similar size Yaqi synth.

As for the 34HD and DE89 the vídeo bellow sustains that both razors are overrated and that the Future should be considered the ideal tool for beginners

The arguments are valid but since I am a beginner who started with a futur and have not tried yet the two other razors I cannot comment

Hi. Thanks so much for all the advice. I ended up buying this kit to get me going.

https://www.murdocklondon.com/uk/product/shaving/shave-master.html

I have been using it for five days and it is working out great so far. I'm really enjoying the experience of proper shaving. My wife has said that my skin looks better. I look forward to trying out some of your recommendations as I progress.

If you wanted to, I could offer you an Edwin Jagger DE89 3D Diamond incl. some blades along with a Stirling Plissoft Synthie brush at a reasonable price.

Just took a look at the set you bought. Unless that brush is a really good Silvertip, I wouldn't know why this should be priced at 110 GBP...?

You could've had for example a Rockwell 6C razor, Razorock Plissoft brush, Taylor of Old Bond Street cream, and Proraso Pre- and Postshave balm at less than 100 GBP.

I'm pretty happy with the razor that came with the kit to be honest it seems to work really well. What would an Edwin Jagger or Rockwell do differently?

I am not using a brush the kit didn't come with one. I might try getting hold of a brush and a soap next. So far I have just been using the shaving cream and applying it by hand.

A shaving brush is arguably the single most important purchase you can make.

You can shave with a sharpened piece of flint if your beard is well prepared.

Anyway, you seemed to have already made your mind up about what you were going to buy before making your first post so I'm not sure if you'll get any more answers regarding what you've bought.

Does sound like an expensive starter kit. Interestingly on the link, the blurb says "The expert kit to perfect the art of the traditional wet shave at home. Contains: Shaving Cream (200ml), Ernest Shave Brush, Ernest Double Edge Razor", yet the picture doesn't show a brush, and obviously you don't have one. The retailer's stock image and description basically don't match up.

Fair enough if you're enjoying it, but if that's basically a DE89 rip off razor, their equivalent black smooth handled DE razor sells for £26. Meaning you paid £84 for some pre shave oil, shaving cream and post shave balm, oh and a tin, and don't have a brush. Good that you're enjoying the DE experience though

I'd forgotten about Maseto, excellent brushes that punch well above their weight.

I prefer synthetics. I had a Maseto Silvertip - about the top Maseto - and sold it for a Yaqi Mew Brown Moka Express which I prefer in all ways - ease of lathering, no maintenance, face feel. I've since bought 2 more Yaqi synthetics. Synthetics all the way for me.
