New to DE razors

I do not agree with staying with a blade that may not suit. I do not get on with Astra blades and will not use them as I get weepers and find them rough, others love them and each to their own. I'd put them away for now and try something different like a Ladas. Give your skin a chance to recover for a couple of days and try it again.

Which other blades beside Ladas do you like?

You're going to have to find your own blade, what works for some won't necessarily work for you.
If you're not getting a good shave on a WTG pass why do you want to start doing XTG/ ATG passes?
Just stay WTG untill you sort your technique( including pick ups). You don't have to do XTG/ ATG passes just because some bloke on Youtube does.

+1 on Shave to the graves thoughts. I would try any of the Russian blades they aren't as sharp as some but they make up for it in smoothness. I've never had any bother with the Rapira, Voskhod's, Ladas blades. All give me a comfortable shave and paired with one of the razors that suits me always give impeccable results.

If using PayPal having to play the waiting game at least you are supposed to loose time only not money but still a pain in the behind.

Good advise about walking away. Even very experienced shavers cannot achieve BBS results every shave. What you should be aiming for is a DFS (Damn fine shave) that will be good enough for all but the most obsessive shavers. Get a good two pass shave and put the razor away and as your technique improves so will the shaves until you are getting shaves as good as any of us on here. It will happen in time.

Agreed..... the good shaves do come after plenty of practice (some of the right gear, not always expensive) helps as well.

I thought I shaved ok until I started with a DE and stopped using gel ( and even worse foam, my wife has it all now and says she hasnt bought any for her legs for years....).

This is my gear for the next few weeks.
I'm thinking two uses per blade until I find one that suits me.
The main soap will be the Windsor, but will also try the samples.
The razor will be the Parker 24c.
I've just ordered 12 more soap samples!!! Chances are that sticking to mach 3 would be cheaper overall :D
Still no sign of my DE89. Edwin Jagger confirm that they've sent it, but the post office people don't know anything about it.
I think Wilkinson will be next one to try.

You've noted that you've gone for 3 passes and too many touch-ups. I've personally found it easy to get carried away with too many passes or too many touch-ups.

I can't tell you how many times I've had a damn fine shave with no nicks or weepers, only to give myself a few when touching up.

Especially as a beginner, "touching up" can amount to dabbing at the skin with the razor, rather than a gentle slide. It's possibly this that causes those "touching up weepers".

The funny thing is, we know that we're doing it. We know exactly what the outcome will be. Does this stop us? Does it 'eck! Touch-ups should be fairly well avoided as a beginner. Since taking longer, slow-ish strokes during my shaves I've drastically reduced my chances for weepers/irritation. Only if I get carried away do I tend to have sub-par shaves these days.

Blademonkey, I did not use paypal. I used my debit card. Another lesson learned.

Task for today was angle, pressure, short strokes, pressure, enough water in the lather, pressure and just WTG passes. I used the Windsor soap, 24C razor and Wilkinson blade.
Totally different sensation! The blade was very smooth!
I've done two WTG passes and maybe slightly XTG.
My hairs grow almost parallel to the skin. After those two passes it looked like one day growth. Because the blade was so smooth I became cocky and decided for some ATG touch-ups. It all went good and I can say I had a DFS! I did have a few minor weepers after the first WTG passes.

I will stick to the Wilkinson for the moment, but will try some of the other blades too.

I've tried the DRHarris sandalwood cream tonight. I wasn't crazy about the scent in the first place, but still wanted to try it. It kept drying out and had no slickness even if I've used plenty of water. The lather wasn't as luxurious as Windsor's. The blade was a Wilkinson on the second use and felt a little rough. I had a few minor weepers.
