New scales required

One of my restored vintage blades (1900) has an issue with the scales.
Whilst shaving, I noticed an acrid smell, and fear that the sun has started to turn the celluloid
Its time to replace the scales, and whilst I like some of the scales at Invisible Edge, I would rather someone else undertook the work.
I wonder if anyone has any recommendations on who to do this work?

Hi Jaysel, I've no expectation here but just to let you know that I've done a bit of scales work/replacement but only for myself. I've no doubt that there are a few other guys here who've dabbled too. So far I've only worked with wood on a couple of vintages SR's who's celluloids became old and loose.
I'm pretty happy with the results but I wouldn't class myself a pro restorer in any way.... more of a hobbyist. I'd be happy to post you some pics and if you like what you see then perhaps we could arrange something. If it's more a question of replacing some scales with some you've chosen, then I'd be happy to do that too.
FYG not all scales will necessarily fit your razor properly so you may have to have them custom made. You can find many raw materials to choose from on eBay including plastics and interesting woods such as Indian Rose wood or Cocobolo.
I currently have lots of Teak from an old garden table and some Moroccan Thura.

Thanks JohnJo. I appreciate your offer.
In fact I just sent it off to someone to have some work done yesterday. Custom made faux tortoiseshell from Kirinite.
I'll definitely keep you in mind for my next project. I'm thinking of revamping my H.Eicker Heartring soon

Thanks Jaysel, no problem. I've just looked at the Kirinite site and loving some of those acrylic finishes. Great food for thought. I hope it turns out well (y)

Has there been any affect on the blade? The reason I ask is that celluloid scales can sometimes suffer from what is known as cellrot and this causes pitting on the blade when closed. Take a look at the blade - and if there are signs of pitting where it is enclosed within the scales, you need to isolate it from any other razors you have otherwise it could contaminate other celluloid scales. As far as I'm aware there is no cure, you just need to get rid of the scales ASAP and hope that the damage is not too severe.

Hi Rob,

The cellrot has only just started. I noticed that the blade had been left in sunlight and the next time I used it, they scales smelled fairly funky. That was about a month ago, and new scales are being made this weekend.
The blade is being honed in any case, so I am sure anything untoward will be noticed.
I think the blade is fine - but thanks for the nod.
