MWF conclusion

Well, my new puck arrived and like a child took it for a test right away, so much has been said that I needed to try for myself :)

I can't understand what the problem is all about  No blooming and 30 seconds load was enough to do a successful palm lather test.

I'm impressed with the quality of the lather, I was expecting a lather like I get from TOBS or DR Harris triple milled soaps but this is so much better. The one thing I wasn't impressed with, although I wasn't surprised, it's the scent, which is nothing to shout about.

Now, I'm ready for a shave with my new found friend :)

If my puck turns out to be a dud. I'll get one from the same seller. Out of interest, where in the country are you. Just considering water hardness, which may be a red herring anyway.

I think I'm allergic to The Fat :(

I'd had several shaves which seemed OK then one day I got some horrible red & sore patches on my face. At first I wasn't sure if it was a reaction to the alum block I was using or the lanolin in MWF but now it looks like it was the soap.

@NatJag, if you are going to get another puck I'd recommend waiting a few weeks til the Black Friday sales and get a Kent puck in the sales, I think it's £5.40 for a puck shipped.

As for water hardness I'm in South London and have very hard water, but I found once I got my loading sorted I could get a lather with it no problem. Some people put their pucks in a container, and leave it with water for a few days so the puck expands/softens to make the load up quicker/easier. I also had problems getting a lather with an Arko puck as well, and that was purely down to the puck being so hard it took a little longer to load the brush than with softer soaps.

Once it took me a bit of time to get my technique sorted, I had no problem building a lather with it but some seem to do still have a problem and whether it's consistency or not, I'd still say life's too short to keep on trying or to get another puck of MWF when the last one didn't work out for you. I think there are other soaps which produce fantastic lathers, I'd recommend trying something like Vitos Red as an alternative, it's another well priced slick tallow based shaving soap with a good post shave feel.

Sorry to hear.

I myself have allergies to a lot of shaving soaps, and it makes the choice of soaps a narrower pool than the one that many others have.

I'm in Bournemouth and we have hard water.

I used a board brush for the test and again for the shave; I built a really nice lather and then I over saturated it with water lol so I went back to the pack for 10 seconds or less and problem fixed. I think I know now when to stop adding water.

I should try a synthetic brush next.

Good call on the black Friday sale.

I managed to load the brush fine, which I though was going to be a problem. I did even try one attempt rubbing the puck direct to my face. Even slowly adding water, it turned into an aerated mess, which dissipated quickly. I knew to add water which would stop the dissipating. I just ended up building more aerated lather which I could fill the sink with. I didn't have a boar brush to try.

I shall see how @pjgh gets on with it. If it turns out to be a duff puck, I will try again. Otherwise, I'll just admit defeat.

With apologies to The Monkees/Neil Diamond:

I thought MWF was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me
MWF was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams...

Unfortunately, I was a believer, but my faith is fading fast. Soaking, wetting, lots of water, little water, no water, I get a wonderful looking lather in the bowl that lasts about 5 minutes tops. After the first time, I haven't tried to shave with it. I could see through it before I got to the other side of my face. Back in Boot Camp we got about two minutes to shave, but that was back in the dark old days when men were men and women were necessary (If I were a bit older, I would add 'and bread was a nickel a loaf.').

It's also pretty disappointing in the shower, feels good, lathers like crazy, but does a lousy job on your hair.

There must be a bit of Sisyphus in me as it's going to get another shot. They say it's triple milled, so maybe it needs another pass. This time it's just going to be a grater.

Interesting that you could previously lather your Kent/MWF puck. I'm waiting to see if mine is lather able or connuaghts do indeed have a dodgy batch.

I had a similar reaction yesterday after I tried it in the shower. As it was fairly soft, I used it on a wash cloth, not my normal routine. Later on in the day, I had similar red lines under my eyes and most of my face was very sensitive. Residing in the Land of the Morning Calm, we're required to wear face masks (unless you're eating or drinking or smoking or talking on the phone), and the major irritation was where the top line of the mask rested. Nowhere else was affected. Today, all is well.

That was a very odd occurrance as I don't have sensitive skin.

If I get it vulcanized, can I use it for a hockey puck?

I'm afraid it's natural selection in action. Over thousands of years the genes which make people unable to handle MWF will gradually be weeded out of the gene pool as smoother-skinned, Fat-tolerant individuals enjoy greater reproductive success.

A soap which will literally shape the future of mankind.
