Moving On From A Merkur HD

I started shaving with a DE a little over 2 years ago, switching to old technology after being deeply frustrated with the quality of the shave I was getting from a Fusion.

My first DE was a Merkur Progress that broke on me in about a week. With the vendor having no additional stock for an exchange I settled on the HD as next best and mechanically simpler to boot. Since then it has been my go to razor and has probably been used on 50+ odd % of my shaves since. It seems to be the defacto recommendation for newbie's and after my use I'd heartily go along with this but I fancy trying something new.

My *need* to move comes from a greener-grass type moment every time day when I read about SOTD posts with razors that have more "cool". I know this is irrational and slightly stupid but, hey, perhaps I'm just a little of both. I know the ultimate shave cool is a straight, and I'll get one at some point no doubt, but not quite yet!

So people of The Shaving Room what DE should I get? Muhle? Ikon? Mergress? A.N.Other?

As a guide; My Razor history. (Major RAD at the start of the hobby..... )

Several Gillette Super Speeds from the 60's and 70's. Good but not great, found the blade angle harder to get on with than the Merkur HD.
A Gillette Slim Adjustable. Closest to ousting the Merkur HD but just lacking sparkle.
A Gillette Super Adjustable. Never liked the (lack of) balance.
Merkur Slant. To harsh for me. I've also got a couple of technique moves that suit my face that seemed to always cause a weeper with the Slant but not the HD.
Schick Injector. If I could get NOS blades I'd use it more regularly.

given my recent experiences with the Muehle R41 I would have no qualms about recommending it.Nicely engineered and equally nice to look at, it performs consistently well for me.

The Merkur 11C is highly thought of. It is an open comb HD.

If you prefer to step away from the "HD" types & are interseted in an open comb have a squint at the Ikons.

The Muehle R41does look good though.
