Merkur/Gillette comparisons

I have now used Merkur 34c and 38C.

And a Gillette Fatboy (set at 5) and Flair tip rocket.

Each with Gillette super thins.

All the razors gave a comfortable shave. But what a different feel. The Gillettes didn't seem to be touching the bristles as directly as the Merkurs. And didn't seem to be giving such a close shave. Having been using the Merkurs for a while I felt that I had to resist the temptation to apply more pressure with the Gillettes. I do sense that the Gillettes did not give quite such a close shave and I may feel more comfortable using sharper blades like feathers with them. Of course I know I can adjust the Fatboy setting.

Just wondered what other people's experiences have been among those who have used each of these razors. Any advice?

Hmm . . . I think it's mainly a weight issue: the Merkurs are like a modern BMW or Audi 4x4, very solid and heavy. The old Gillettes (even the Fatboy and suchlike) are more like old classic sportcars: nippy, agile, throw them round the bends. Not really fair to compare them. But you are right in principle: a sharper blade in a lighter razor can be a great shave (all cut and no pressure).

Second, there's the angle issue. They do require different wrist positions and the one you first learned with is likely to be the memory muscle of choice and feel most natural. The only way round this is to stick with one razor until it is comfortably giving close shaves and feels second nature, then return to it from time to time to remind yourself and refresh your technique.

HTH, just my 2c

Gotta dash!
