Like many I imagine, I received an email from Maggards

To all of our loyal International customers

International postage rates are going up on June 24, 2020

Economy International will be going up anywhere from 15% - 50% from current levels depending on the weight of the parcel and what country you are located in. This is due to the re-negotiation of rates in the Universal Postal Union (UPU). For years, the USA was subsidizing incoming parcel rates into our mail system. Finally, this year we took a stand and raised our inbound mail rates. In return, countries around the world retaliated by increasing their inbound rates as well. We are now left with a huge increase worldwide for standard mail services.

This is your last chance to take advantage of current rates -- and we're shaving off an additional 30% for the next 4 days for our loyal International customers.

Keep in mind - COVID-19 is still impacting delivery times.

In fact, many of you might still be waiting for parcels from us from orders placed in March, April, and May. Recently we have been seeing more and more parcels getting delivered in the past few days that have been in-transit over 70 days. If you're waiting for a parcel - please be patient - and understand that this was something completely out of our control. And if you do decide to place a new order, understand that it could be a long time before it shows up in your mailbox. But things are still arriving reliably - just slow. This is going to be the last chance to get the cheapest rates out of the USA forever, so if you don't mind the wait, take advantage now!

It seems the golden era of cheap shipping from Maggards will be over soon.

How do you plan to react to this sad and terrible news? Any impending purchases to catch the cheap shipping window before shipping costs are raised?

A little honest background on this subject:

Cheers for the info.

Their shipping rates are so cheap that a 50% increase will still make them cheaper than the other US competition.

Yeah you're completely right Chris. The only thing that I ever bought from them was a package of 2 packs of blades, and they were both a let down (fumbled one night stand). I feel I need to embrace the Maggards love in a more fulfilling manner.

Is there not a big import tax to pay for items from America or is that only for soaps? I'm assuming that goes on top of your shipping costs if its for all items?

For goods over £15 you have to pay VAT (20%) on the whole value including shipping , if the whole value including shipping is under £135 you don't pay duty. If it is over you pay import duty which can vary depending on what the goods are categorised this is generally between 3.5 percent and 6 percent on shave goods. Duty is charged on top of the VAT.

If someone sends you a gift it can be up to £39 in value including shipping before it attracts charges but must be declared as a gift on the import forms. These rules are about the same all over the EU.

The last charge is the Admin fee from the courier , the royal mail is cheapest at £8 (Lots of people moan about this). the other couriers charge as much as £ 30.

Thanks for that @RussellR5555. One to screenshot and save so I can go back to it down the line.

Are you aware of any UK sites to get American soaps? Seen Stirling etc mentioned a lot so will no doubt want to test them down the line. Col Conk as well... £30 a puck on Amazon but $4 odd in America...madness!

Shaving Time stock most if not all Stirling products in the UK.

If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute.

Thomas Paine: Rights of Man, 1791

I've bought from there very recently. Was greatly surprised as i paid neither vat or handling fee on a soap in to the uk. Economy post and marked as low value......geat. bit slow but hey got my chiseled face pine tar soap for less than £15.
Email them and ask, great service, great comms. (Great soap too) I'll buy from there again.
