Le Père Lucien Shaving Soap

Another product without a thread it seems. Anyway, another week, another review. My verdict:

It's a pretty hard soap and comes somewhat crammed into the metal tin. I like the packaging but the lack of any room means it's hard to bloom without soaking the whole container. Not that I found you needed to bloom it to get a good lather.

It bills itself as a 100% vegetarian soap. Some veggie soaps I've found to have poor results, especially when it came to lather. Not this though, it was easy to lather, generally provided good slickness and protection and the post shave feel was pretty good too.

I didn't manage any truly fantastic shaves with it, but all of them were of a high standard.

The traditional fragrance will likely divide people. I didn't mind it, but it's quite strong and certainly not something I wanted to linger. I'd even class it as a slight turn-off.

It wasn't a product I fell in love with, but had performance that was hard to ignore.

Good to read more reports on Le Père Lucien's soaps ...

Personally, I rate it very highly. My trick was to upgrade from 98g to 200g tins almost immediately and to remove half an inch of soap from the 200g tins into another container so I could lather on the soap in the larger tins.

I love the stuff! Initially, I wondered what all the fuss was about and even posted on a G+ group where I know there was a good few LPL users as I really didn't "get it". Next go, I happened to use a wetter brush ... and then, then it all became clear :D

The scents on these soaps are great, very good essential oils in classic blends. For me they smell as good as anything. The shaves have not been great though unfortunately. I have added plenty of water and lathered for plenty of time but the lather remains very airy with large bubbles.

On the face, the lather has lacked both slickness and cushion and the shaves have not been good. Twice I have chucked away the lather after 1 pass and resorted to a quick rub of Palmolive shaving stick instead with immediately better results. It is a shame, I would love to match the scents to a soap that performed for me.

I could probably get a better shave if I work more on getting the lather right, but it isn't a top performer for me right now. YMMV definitely seems true, but we all have different skin and beard so it makes sense.

As with any soap, just load 'til you have the right amount, use the right amount of water and lather 'til you have the lather you want. To load, I go with 10 swirls usually; LPL might want a few more. Hence the "load for longer" ... nothing like the 80 plus you see with more popular soaps. Just a few swirls and lather away. Ready for shaving within say 40 seconds rather than 20-30 when face lathered. Bowl latherers do like to bugger about ...

Simple, simple, simple soap. Very classy.

Absolutely agree - very simple to lather to a rich cream, but it still lacks too many of the properties I want for a good shave. As such, it's very good for washing new brushes. I won't miss it when it's gone, I'll just move on to another less-than soap in my stash.

I really enjoy LPL, the longer I leave it to cure in open air, the better it has been performing. It has slightly crystallised and works up a thick rich cushioned lather. It could do with more slickness though.
